Why is everyone trying to discourage me from getting an MBA?
I'm 30 yrs old and I just finished a liberal arts undergrad degree; because of that, I'm having trouble breaking into the corporate/business world. I feel as if I need an MBA to give myself some credibility. I do realize that most pursue their MBA after working for a few years in the corporate world but I can't get any experience if I can't get my foot in the door. Please give me some helpful advice.

Getting an MBA certainly couldn't hurt. An MBA coupled with a strong technical degree like engineering or science was popular and found success for many people for a decade. The problem now is that you can't spit without hitting an MBA. Perhaps that is why your friends are discouraging you.

You will have trouble if you have no experience and only a BA in Liberal Studies getting into the Business Market, so getting your MBA is a good step.
What exactly are you looking to do however in Business? You may want to get an Masters in Finance for example if you want to work in Finance.
I have friends who have Biology degrees and a Masters in Finance and not an MBA who are very happy.
If you prefer Accounting look into a Master in Accounting, or Human Resources etc.
Consider the field you want to pursue and get an advanced degree tailored more closely to that. I'm not saying that an MBA is not good, there are just other options too.
Good Luck

I'm in the same boat except my degree is science. The reason is probably that you may not be able to get into an MBA program without at least 3 years of work experience. They may think that you're wasting your time and money on the GMAT and application fee. From your comment, I'm not sure if you are unable to get a job at all or can't get a business type job. You don't need work experience in business to get into business school. Try to find any job (sales or something), endure it for four years, then you should definitely apply. Or if you can't find a job at all, maybe you should consider a second undergrad degree which is what I might do.

I also agree with Jen. Though a Masters in Finance or Accounting will not give you as much options as an MBA and does not have the same prestige, it can get you a good job in those specific area. Plus, I'm sure you don't need work experience to get into those types of programs so that might save you a lot of meaningless work for four years.

Good Luck!

I wouldn't discourage you from getting an MBA. Your coursework will give you tools that you can use for your employer or for yourself if you have your own business. Many businesses hire MBAs and put them on fast track for management positions.

Ignore your friends, an MBA is good strategic pursuit for your career, whatever you do.

Get your MBA. It will work wonders when looking for promotions or new work. Go for it!

If you are 30 and just got your BA what have you been doing? That experience may be viewed favorably by the MBA admissions committee. I know military experience is.

The key would be how well you do on the GMAT. The schools are looking for real world experience and a level of maturity and how you get there matters little if you have the test scores. Be sure to bone up on the quantitative stuff because that is considered quite important.

Also, I believe that the case method MBA is far more useful in the real world and is "experience" so the recruiters like that too. Filter for the best case method school you can get into, all MBAs are not equal!

I suggest you do some research and then go visit (in person) with one or two admissions officers and see what they say about your credentials (but take the test first).

Good luck.

First, you should go for your Associates or Bachelor's in Business Administration or a related course. With that knowledge it will help you go on to get your MBA. And having an MBA always looks better than a BBA or BS on your resume!

Try your best and you'll do fine. Alot of big companies only hire >3.5 GPA. So, Good luck!

(And if you're in the NJ/NY area, I suggest Berkeley College. It's a great business school and offers weekend and evening and online courses. Plus, you would graduate faster. (3 years instead of the 4+ years at other schools for BS) )
