Why is it acceptable to bailout big companies like automakers?
I'm not saying that if you bailout the big ones, then bailout all of the small ones, that would be impossible.

I'm saying the gov't shouldn't bailout anyone, right?

• Should all of the Detroit Three's U.S. operations cease in 2009, the first-year total employment impact would be a loss of nearly 3 million jobs in the U.S. economy—including 239,341 direct job losses at the three auto companies; 973,969 secondary jobs at auto supply companies; and more than 1.7 million jobs at other employers from the reduced spending by those jobless workers. The employment picture would recover somewhat in 2010 and 2011, due to increased U.S. production by foreign-based automakers and dislocated workers finding new jobs.

• Even if just one or more of the auto companies goes down, the first-year losses would still be nearly 2.5 million jobs in the U.S. in the first year before coming back somewhat in the second and third years. That's because the domino effect of one major automaker going under would push several financially fragile auto suppliers into insolvency, which would interrupt production at the remaining car companies.

• In economic terms, a 50% cut in the Detroit Three's U.S. operations would reduce personal income by more than $125.1 billion in the first year, and $275.7 billion over three years.

Center for Automotive Research (CAR) Chairman David Cole, one of the authors of the study, says legislators and members of the public who doubt the U.S. auto industry is worth saving "should realize the costs of it failing are far greater than the $25 billion in loans the industry is seeking."

Unfortunately, one needs to think of the ramifications of the failure of all three American car companies (and don't think that the Japanese companies aren't getting help - they always have). Somewhere around 1 in 10 American jobs are directly tied to the fortunes of the American car companies, from car salesmen, to auto mechanics, to all the parts suppliers. If all three companies go under, there is an immediate jump in the unemployment rate of 10 percent (not to 10% but up 10% to about 16%), Now, take those earnings out of the economy and what happens? Retail stores sales start dropping as these folks stop purchasing things so they lay people off. And so on and so on.

While bailing out the auto industry may be a bitter pill to swallow, the alternative could be much worse and cost just as much So, you get to take your pick, bail out the auto companies for say $100 billion or increase government expenditures to unemployment, training programs, welfare programs, food stamps, etc by $100 billion.

If anyone needs bailing out it is all of the hard working people of this nation If your going to bail out big buss. Bail out EVERYONE!

Reena
Talk to the employees of those big companies and see whether they would like to keep their jobs..
Some companies are major employers and if they go down whole regions around them go down too. No job, no money.

Im with you- no bailouts!! We have Capitalism not socialism...and why help those greedy companies anyway? They didnt cut their prices when time were good for them and give the working person a break! In fact, all this time they are crying save us and save jobs, they are investing in automation and using tactics to bust the unions and replace them with cheaper labor....heck no dont bail them out!! Let 'em go bust who cares now anyway!!

While, I certainly enjoy the irony of the American taxpayer giving a loan to American automakers because those same Americans cannot afford or simply do not want their product, it is most likely necessary. It is way too many jobs lost if even one of them fail. GM was teetering even before the credit freeze. Think about the ramifications if they went bankrupt, the economy would absolutely go in the crapper. So, I don't really agree with the government spending more money when it has none to spend, it's probably necessary. Maybe the government can get the loan from China. In the case of Chrysler, it'll be a beautiful little mutt car. A chinese financed, made in mexico, sort of american, German car. Awesome.
