Hilary6 | Why is it "bad" to shop at Wal Mart? |
I keep reading/hearing that everyone should boycott Wal Mart because they underpay workers and treat them badly to deliver rock bottom prices to consumers.
Okay, if they are getting paid so little and treated like dogs...then why continue to work there? I understand right now jobs are scarce, but it hasn't always been that way. But if it has always been so bad to be an employee at Wal Mart then why did they work there for all these years?
I knew a lady that did inventory at night at a Wal Mart and never once heard her complain that she was treated badly and underpaid, she liked her job and if she didn't then she would have simply worked elsewhere.
I read online that "the average salary of a worker is $10 per hour." Big deal. If you are standing at the door putting stickers on items people are returning or glancing at their receipt on the way out....you aren't worth $10 an hour. That is minimum wage labor and I would be willing to bet that doesn't require a college degree either.
As for the people that do the heavy lifting from trucks, I'm sure they get at least $10 an hour because that is rough work. And if they aren't getting paid enough there, they can somewhere else. The average salary for a warehouse stocker (not just at Wal Mart. Warehouses all over the country) is $26,000/ year....divided into 40 hour weeks that is $13.02 per hour. The average of the workers making salaries around that number and salaries around minimum wage is....LOW AND BEHOLD....UNDER $10!! And that number comes from using fair salaries.
I hear the other drawback to Wal Mart is that it is putting "Mom and Pop" stores out of business. Guess what...this is a totally new day and age from what your Grandma and Pop lived in. Most people in the built up suburban areas that Wal Mart is in do not have dreams and aspirations of owning their granddad's hardware stores. People have many many other oppurtunities these days. Also, the mom and pop stores that are still thriving, close very early and rarely stay open on a weekend, especially a Sunday. That isn't convenient for consumers, Wal Mart however is. So if that store ran by those old people down the street isn't open when I need something, you can bet I will be headed to Wal Mart...just like everyone else. And that is what happened to the little locally operated stores.
If your argument is that most things in Wal Mart are made in China, or some other country in a sweat shop, you're wrong there too. Half the store is made up of items produced here. Go look around your house, garage, office, anywhere and not half of what you own was created here, or is made up of other parts not created here.
I could go on and on about this, but you tell me why it's bad to shop at Wal Mart after reading all of this. |

I completely agree with everything you say, except that a lot of things there are made in China. However, in my opinion, it's a great place for great deals. Obviously, just a handful of people not shopping there isn't going to shut it down, so those people are just hurting themselves for no reason. |

I agree with you.
Over here in the UK we have Tesco and they get blamed for everything as well.
You are quite right these mom and pop stores wouldn't be going out of business if they lowered their prices and stocked what people wanted.
People want to pay less, thats why shops like Walmart and Tesco are very very very successful.
As for where items are made - the world is a global economy now - and where things are made doesn't matter.
What matters is how good the quality is.
Nobody buying a tin of paint cares where it was made, they want to know that when they get home it's gonna look good on their wall! |

LOL! Wal-mart under pays and treat workers like trash???
WHAT? If you think Wal-Mart under pays and mistreat his employees, then you REALLY need to look up Kroger!!!
I worked for both companies, and i can honestly say that Wal-Mart is NOT underpaying or mistreating his employees what so ever! They are as fair as any other company!
Kroger abuse their employees like no company you ever heard of! Pays minimum wage.. And rip their employees off of their raises!! They treat you like a slave there (except you dont get whipped. But hell, they talk down to you like an abused pet). Yet their prices are still among the highest!! so wtf!!! Even if wal-mart DID underpay (which DOESN'T) It makes up for it by providing customers with very affordable products!!!
EDIT: I am not saying "you" as in you who asked this question.. I mean "you" as in people who think that.. :) |

Because they purposefully under staff their cashier lines so the waits are horrendous. The cost of the lost time offsets the savings in the merchandise. |

The family who owns walmart are also really selfish. They donate a tiny amount of money to charity each year (less that 5%) I watched a special on walmart one day and it was saying all kinds of bad things about it. They also have bad security in the parking lots. People were realizing that they didn't even have their security cameras on and all kinds of crime was going on in the parking lots. They open hardly any of their check outs, and they don't keep their parking lots and the inside of their stores clean and organized. The only nice walmarts that I've been to are the brand new ones, and those are usually trashed within only a few years. |

I do agree about this day and age of business. But you have to understand that some people like the mom and pop stores. Have you ever been to one. If your like most people you need walmart super centers for the purpose of entertaining you. I think both have there place in society. And just remember one thing, just because these small stores dont have all those little gadgets you like to play with, doesnt mean they are not useful. |
