Why is it that recruitment agencies charge a fortune to the company for people but pay them very little?

Additional Details
Yes its business and i understand that they are out to make a profit but is it not a better idea to pay the workers slightly more so that they would be happier at work which in turn allows them to recommend them and get them more clients making them more profit, rather than rip off the ones that they have.

Because they are a business, providing a service and have to make money.

the simple answer is, they're just greedy b*****s

bogstandard
Because they are greedy! Its money for nothing. Get desperate people looking for work, charge a fortune to "introduce" them then sit back and reap the rewards.

its not the agencies fault its the employers they are too lazy to recruit themselves and then have to pay agencies and if they pay extra to agencies they have less money in wages budget.
its just legitimised pimping really.

Your going to the wrong recruitment agencies.

Did you know that many local authorities have their own agencies. Also it may pay you to find an agency that has a big corporate clients on their books, like for example BP.

This way in time you may become long term agency staff and as such be assured of good rates of pay and also many of the same terms and conditions of employment as do permenant staff, except for pension schemes and some holiday entitlements there will not a be a great deal of difference.

I worked for BP as Long Term Agency (LTA)
staff and used to earn more than some of the permanent staff. How did this come about? Well many staff were salaried and were not entitled to overtime pay whereas I was.Strange old world.

Worth shopping around the agencies and ask if they have big corporates on their books.

Good luck!

I think the basic salary with recruitment is pretty low - but thought that there was a considerable bonus or performance relating element - 'on target earnings' meaning you are expected to place a certain amount of people and then get paid above and beyond that.

This type of package is designed to be motivational to those of a sales type mentality.

Also firms tend to charge their clients of a %age of salary basis. Top end executives may command a high salary and a high %age commission payable, but it may take a lot of research and interviewing by the agency to locate a suitable individual.
