Why is it that with a degree in Applied Music i work in a call centre?

capollar has the right idea I think. You just expect someone to give you a job. And thats what happened with the call center. So, you shouldnt complain. I thought music was about creativity. If you have the talent for your profession go out and create a career. Create ideas and pitch them to whoever will listen, individuals, groups, the public at large. Dont just sell your degree. Thousands have a degree. Show them what you have learned from it and how you can use your unique skills to apply it. Differentiate yourself from all the rest who have a degree. Degrees are generic until you apply your skills to them. Dont expect just a job. Thats what college is suppose to teach you. How to think for yourself and problem solving.

Because Applied Music was a stupid thing to major in.

Perhaps you should have taken a degree in a real subject, and then been able to get a real job in the real world.

If you want to take 'stylish' degrees, then you have to suffer the consequences when they prove to be about as valuable as the certificate they are written-on

Applied Music, my arrrse!!

Swampy_Bogtrotter
Just lucky I guess, You must have wanted the job there, or else you wouldn't have applied for it. It gives you the chance to talk to lots of different people everyday, just enjoy it while you can, and on your days off, why not try and find something else to do that bears some relation to your degree!! Good luck.

What exactly is Applied Music? What is it that you apply the music to. It is a pity that you have a degree and end up in a lousy job, but it could be worse at least you have a job.

Helen B
Do you live in Stoke on Trent by any chance? Degrees count for nothing round here, you have to leave the area or commute to get a good job

capollar
because you gave up on your dream

what ever you want to do is depend on you ,
go and change your mind....

make it happen ,, what ever you want

brogdenuk
It is a job, that is what most people say.

fcas80
Because you didn't sufficiently research all the wonderful jobs that exist for people with your major. Go back to your teachers and ask them what people do with this major.

old know all
Lack of ambition. Work out your contract then go and kick down the doors of the music industry.

because companies arent just auto handing good jobs for college degrees these days, you actually have to have competance and bring something to the table.

Welcome to the world!

Where do you want to work? What do you want to do? You have to go out and make it happen and you have to keep at it. Otherwise you will remain at the call centre forever.

because its not a real degree but follow what u wanna do, i think it might be something to do with music just a guess.

FaerieWhings
What kind of work can you get with that degree?

***************************

This breaks down what type of learning you get with an degree in Applied Music.

http://www.strath.ac.uk/caas/ug-info/appliedmusic.htm

Basically it's performance enhancement as well as music theory and audio engineering. There in lies your problem. Didn't you realize that you don't need to be good in the music industry anymore, you just have to be a sell-able commodity.

I've been going though the same thing here, studied theory and voice (1st soprano coloratura) and wondered many times, why did I bother with all that when all I had to do was be pretty for the camera. Just keep doing what you are doing, one day music will return to an art form, hopefully.
