Why is project management so popular?

Project Manager
Project management has grown more popular in recent years for many reasons :

- Projects and services have grown larger and more complex.
- Global competition has increased the need to be more efficient.
- Better access to information via computers and communications networks.
- More sophisticated customers with higher quality demands.
- Rapid rates of change (including technology).
- Downsizing – doing more with fewer people.
- A increased amount of outsourcing.
- Larger organizations attempting to standardize their operations and incorporate best practices.
- Movement away from time and material type contracts to fixed price contracts.

There are many different industries that employ PMs, from construction and business to IT and biotech. So the basic skills are very transferable (and marketable).

There is an international certification - PMP - so people can show that they know how to apply industry standards.

Project Management normally leads to more successful projects, and projects being done on time, on budget, to expected quality. Trying to do a project without a PM can be hazardous to the organization of the tasks.

Good question!

Because today companies have fewer levels of management and everything (big and small) is managed by projects. And the less cumbersome the process is, the better.
