I have been considering purchsing the new Apple MacBook and whilst comparing prices i have noticed that the UK price is significantly higher than the price advertised on the US website.
At the current rate of exchange the US version retails at the equivalent of 587 GBP, yet it is sold in the Uk for 749 GBP. Is there anything that should account for this price hike? Is it a better computer? It has the same specifications, screen size and memory capacity. Why is Apple trying to rip us off? i don't imagine this is the only product of theirs that is more expensive in the UK.
Additional Details
I don't think the currency exchange rate explains it all. I just remebered iTunes have come under scrutiny for charging the more than in the rest of Europe to download songs.
Also pertol is heavily subsidised in the US and heavily taxed in the UK. That's why there is such a difference in the price. |

Its called currency exchange rates. I think it depends on how strong or weak the pound is compared to how strong or weak the US dollar is. |

Because US prices don't include the sales tax, whereas UK ones include VAT, add to that the strong pound and you get a price that, although, still cheaper in the US, isn't as far apart as you're suggesting.
Companies can charge what they want, if you don't want to pay it don't buy it, if enough people agree they'll have to reduce the price. That's what a free market means.
If the pound crashes or the dollar strengthens, then it could end up being the opposite way round. |

One good reason VAT, it is at least 17% and maybe more on luxury goods like a lap top, it is not Apple that are getting the cash it is the rip off government as usual. and the English market is smaller, so not so many sold so the price is more for the English version, I dare say it is a little different, |

One factor may be where Apple is located. If it is shipping it to you from further, they may hike up the price to lower shipping costs. Also if they are located and making it in the UK it may cost them more to make it which would therefore equate to a higher selling rate. There are plenty of reasons why companies do that. Either way Apple is a better computer than PC ever will be so it will be worth the money. I wish I had the money to buy one. It would save me from having to constantly fix my PC!!!! |

Market price unfortunately. Product is exactly the same. Most things are cheaper in the USA. You could always do what i did a few years back and take a shopping trip to New York, with the current exchange rates you save an absolute fortune! Easy worth it even taking into account hotel and flight costs. Happy Shopping! Tink.......It will work here, its a flaming laptop!!!!!!! designed to be used all over the world!!! Tax has very little to do with the price difference. |
