Probably because they have a variety to choose from, that and almost every one on there list suits at least most people. That and also the fact that they are relatively quick, you can go in, order and pay and have your coffee within 2 minutes, also another thing is quality, would you rather have a nice cappucino from starbucks or something that tastes like they pulled the coffee grinds off the floor from mcdonalds? |

Good marketing, over saturation of the market at the time when coffee culture was in its early stages - cos it surely isn't the coffee. Starbucks coffee is the absolute worst... |

It's a combination of market saturation and luck. Starbucks has been around for quite a while but only recently (past decade) grown so exponentially. This is mainly because Americas sudden obsession with specialty coffee. Starbucks already had a foothold in this niche allowing them to gain market share faster than other shops. And since you can have a relatively small store you can build new sites (or rent the space) cheaply allowing them to put in an astounding number of sites allowing them to make more money, allowing them to build more sites, etc. It is really a near perfect business model. |

The Lovable Rogue
|
One of the traditional reasons for Starbuck's success is their absolute insistence upon the importance of the 'experience'. Many companies try desperately to create an experience around their products, one that encourages the consumer to remain loyal to the company once they have gained her attention. The Starbuck's experience is traditionally referred to as the 'Third Place'. Nearly every Starbucks in the world follows the exact same formula; relaxed atmosphere, jazzy music, consistent colour schemes etc. This is the organisation's attempt to export the experience worldwide.
Arguably, this is what is leading to the company's recent troubles. Americanism can only be exported so far. Additionally, Starbucks is losing 'glamour' as a profession; staff turnover is increasing, and it is becoming increasing difficult to retain the experience upon which it has relied for so long. Whilst it has been able to role out store after store in the past, this tactic is no longer viable. In fact, around 600 stores are to shut in the near future. This clearly shows that Starbuck's success may not be as guaranteed in the future as it has been historically. Maybe the organisation needs to wake up and smell the coffee? |
