eightieschick70 | Why this policy at Target? |
I bought a christmas tree. took it home, A week later I went to put it up and the feet were missing. I went to take it back for an even exchange. I diddnt have the receipt. Its been over a week since I bought it. the sticker with the store number was still on the box, so they know it came from their store. they wouldnt exchange it because I payed cash for it,. now what am I sposed to do with a tree that wont stand up? I dont understand why they have this policy in their store? Is it their way of ripping off the customer? Additional Details sorry, I wasnt sure what catagory to post this question. |

Wow, I went online and read their return policy, U R right, they are very restrictive, NO returns without receipt when used cash. not even store-credit! I must say, I have noticed that many stores have tightened their return policies over the last year or two. I will probably shop Target alot less now that you helped bring their poor return policy to my attention, thank you. |

A lot of large items that come boxed will say on the instructions: Do not return to store, call 800##### regarding any broken or missing parts. |

If you pay with cash they can't track your transaction, but i don't see why they didn't exchange it. They are usually good about it even without a receipt. There may be a manufacturer for the tree that you could contact on the box. Check for that or try going back to target and talking to a manager if the person isn't helpful. They may have been a new person and didn't know what you wanted to do. |

If they won't do anything, just buy a tree stand from Walmart, they have them really cheap. |

That's kinda odd that they won't exchange it or let you at least have the legs from another tree! I have occasionally come across such similar policies, at some other store, and I can't remember which one. But I always try to keep my receipts unless I'm totally positive I will not be returning something for any reason. And this is one that sometimes comes up.
Oh! I remember now. It was LOWES building materials store. I hate that store now and won't shop there unless I have to. I only wanted to exchange the item for an identical one, due to something being wrong with it. The lady at the desk just quickly and curtly, without a pause told me that they don't do any exchanges without a receipt.
I was in retail for over 15 years, so I know who steals and who doesn't. Those who want to just exchange something due to a defect, weren't the ones we suspected of stealing. It was just the ones who wanted refunds or exchanges for items not the same as the ones they were bringing back. (without receipts)
Now, just a little suggestion: Get a small box and put it in an easy place to get to, such as a kitchen drawer, and throw ALL of your receipts in it, except for maybe grocery receipts. Since grocers will swap foods for you if you bring one back that's defective or spoiled before 'use by' date. |

Well, I can't answer for Target specifically. But when I was in high school I worked retail and witnessed a lot of people attempting to return stuff that didn't qualify for returns.
For example, returning products that were purchased over a year ago (they would swear they just bought it, but it would be something the store had not carried for months)
Amazingly, lots of people tried to return food ~ not because it was spoiled or anything, but because they just didn't like the taste. I still remember one lady who tried to return a loaf of bread because it started to become moldy ~ but she had purchased it over 3wks ago!!
Also, there were occasionally incidents of people shoplifting an item, then attempting to "return" it for cash.
Lots of times, people would bring in an obviously used item ~ swear they didn't use it, though ~ and want to exchange it for cash or something else.
I am NOT saying or implying that *you* were dishonest. However, I can understand Target's policy. Unfortunately, due to large numbers of dishonest people, many stores have to make policies like this to protect themselves. |

that's weird that they wouldn't exchange it....it's not like you were asking for your money back or anything....
my boyfriend took his xbox360 to walmart w/ no receipt and they exchanged that no problem....
i wouldve gotten a manager....or call up c.s. |

Don't blame just Target - hundreds and hundreds of stores have the same policy - No receipt , no exchange.
Sure they can see from the sticker it came from their store but how do they know it was you who bought it - you could have found it in someones trash bin.
Moral - always keep your receipts until you are 100% sure the goods are satisfactory.

I'd contat their corporate office about it. They're more likely to do something to help you out than the manager at that particular store. |

Go back to the store, demand to see a manager. If the manager gives you a hard time , ask to see the STORE manager. They can't not take it back, the item was defective. If that fails contact corporate. They won't want to deal with all the trouble. Do not back down, be polite but firm. If that still does'nt work contact the tree manufacturer and the better business bureau. I had a problem with Target also just wanting to exchange a pair of jeans for my daughter that did'nt fit. I hate that store. |

They do this to avoid paying someone for returning a stolen item.
I realize a Christmas tree would be hard to steal but they can't single some things out and not others. |

I've never heard of ANY store with that as a return policy, and I worked at Target for several years. Most stores will do an even exchange even without a reciept. You may try calling the Target headquarters or speaking to a manager at the store you're trying to return it to. You may also be able to get replacement feet from the tree manufacturer. |
