This question is generally asked to test, whether you have done your homework about the company, before attending the interview.
The interviewer intends, that you know about the company, the job profile and your growth factor before you appear for the interview.
So, be very careful while answering your question.
For Eg: If you are applying to a shipping company for a Cost Analyst Profile, the answer to the above question will be :
Since this is a Shipping Company, the company charters vessels to various commodity owners.
Before Chartering a vessel ?( giving it on hire) the company has to know whether it is feasible to recover the returns on vessel chartering.
This involves Costing Analysis.
Being a Cost accountant, i will be able to undertake the costing analysis in a prudent manner.
Since the profile, directly suits my qualification, i see a growth path of my career here.
Moreso, the company all the while used to get the Costing Analysis done from the Research Section.
From the company's point of view, with the appointment of the Cost analyst, the Research Dept gets relieved to undertake more research related activities in future.
Hence, i would like to join the company.

This isn't exactly a trick question as it is normally portrayed, but honesty and a bit of homework from the interviewer's end would answer that well.
It is closely linked to the question: "Where do you see/want to see yourself, say, 5 years from now?" and also complementing "Why did you leave your previous job/company?"
Instead of getting into the mode of flattering the company's revenue/market share/innovation/growth - which the interviewers definitely know without you informing them - you should frame your answer around "the job being resonant to your profile/background" which should also answer the question "Why should we select you?"
Of course you need to show them your homework in terms of knowing/understanding the company, you should not cross the the thin line of overwhelming adulation.
So, if you can answer all of those questions which are directly or indirectly linked to this, and keep it in perfect sync, you would do a good job to enhance your chances. |
