Why would a business establish itslef as a not-for-profit operation?

Most not-for-profit businesses have a different goal then making money - education, charity, etc.

Since the people operating the business can and usually do make a salary, a starting non-profit can be a great way to help your community/society and still make a living.

because they primarily spend money - which they have collected from donations - and they charge for their services just to cover costs. it is done for tax purposes - not to be overly taxed for activities that are useful for the society but are not profitable in their nature.
example: church as an NPO - collects donations - provides spiritual services

Because of the tax breaks.
The tax laws allow many not-for-profit corporations to get by with paying little if any taxes; however, the corporation must meet very strict criteria to apply--most religions and charities fit the criteria.

A business would establish itself as a non-profit organization not just because of the tax breaks. It also recieves donations from sponsors (and maybe consumers). Take WLIW21 for example. "This presentation is funded BY the _______ and from Viewers Like You... thank you." The _____ is filled in by something like the US Department of Education. Sometimes more than one. This way they don't need to make income off of products. It won't need to make income off of ratings. The just need the consumers and sponsors to cooperate and help them run the business. Unfortunately, people might not cooperate and the business might be run into the ground and go out of business. Also, if non-profit, it may be for a cause like Diabetes research.

The nature of the business is charitable.

The purpose of the business is to do good for the community rather than make a profit.

The fees are lower.

The taxes may be non-existant.
