Why would a company cut back employee's hours but then hire more people?
Why would a company cut back employee's hours but then hire more people?

My job is cutting back a lot of our hours but then they're hiring more people, I don't get it.

1. It is cheaper to pay more employees than to pay overtime.

2. New employees can be paid less.

3. The new employees can do more work than you.

4. The new employees can do better work than you.

5. You are getting too close to retirement or vested 401K.

Part-Time employees don't need to be covered by things like a company's benefits (medical / dental / 401k / etc.) & insurance.

some company's will cut back hours to make employees part time then hire more part timers, in a lot of places part-timers aren't paid time and a half and they don't get benefits.

Big corporate places will do very stupid things. Sometimes they will fire employees of many years and get new ones to pay them less, or maybe it's a insurance thing, were if everyone is part time they may not be able to get insurance.

Companies cut back hours and hire more people for many reasons. Here's some:

1- Full Time Employees(40hr) are given benefits(medical/dental/retirement plans). Working only 30hrs a week will not allow you to qualify for these benefits. Saves them money.

2- More employees equal tax breaks for companies. US Government give businesses tax breaks for hiring more employees even they are all part time. The larger the work force the better it is for companies.

3- They can give a lower rate to new people who are willing to work part time.

4- If you're company is planning on downsizing they usually have a key slogan for this, "Out with the old, in with the new."

Unfortunately, you can't live a financially secure life working by the hour. It's all about the bottom line for companies. You're just another worker to them not a person.

If you're fed up with the insanity of working by the hour I suggest you start working for yourself. Email me if you want to know how you can start. It's too long t post up here. (I'm not going to try to sell you anything I promise.)

I hope this helps.

Is there a difference in salary level and/or benefits for part time vs full time? I've seen companies cut a lot hours from people, make them part time and then pay significantly less of the benefits. They then hire a few more people, to make up the hours, but they still aren't paying the full time benefits, so it is more cost effective.

they want to get rid of you guys. im sorry, but thats how i see it.
