Will ATA give me a refund at some point, how does Bankruptcy work..Help!?
I spent 1,500 dollars for plane tickets to and from Hawaii for two people. I bought the tickets through Expedia, the tickets were processed by ATA Airlines, so they received my money. They went bankrupt and are not personally issuing refunds for tickets to any customers at this time. I was told to go to my bank and file a dispute since i used my visa/debit card to purchase the tickets online. My bank told me it does not look good since the airline filed Chapter 11, I am keeping my fingers crossed. I than called Expedia, and they will not refund me. Most airlines are not helping out ATA customers, and if they are only through April-May. My honeymoon was in July so i am screwed. So here i am out 1,500 dollars, my bank is telling me there is no guarantee i will get a refund, ATA cannot give me a refund, Expedia will not help me, they say this is not "their problem." How is this right? How can i get my money back? What should I do? I am so confused and i am feeling hopeless here. Thanks.

Hi, I'm/was in the same situation. I booked a trip to Honolulu from Pitt for July for 2,000 dollars worth of tickets from Expedia using a debit card.
First off, expedia is useless, unhelpful, and a lot of other words I would like to say. It's not fair what ATA did, no airline should get away with this! Expedia as well should be help responsible, they are the ones who booked people on that airline. It's irresponsible and I hope they loose a lot of service.

Now, Friday after realizing how unhelpful everyone was and that no airline would accomodate me, I canceled my itinirary with expedia and I went to my bank, which is a Credit Union, and filed a dispute explaining the airline went bankrupt, they were not answering their phone, expedia was not refunding us, etc. and Expedia gave me a Claim Number to submit to my bank, which I did as well. I as well was not feeling hopeful, actually I thought It was just a shot in the dark and that I was probably out of $2,000 bucks, however today my bank replaced all my money. So, keep hopeful! As I understand it, I think my bank will go after ATA in the bankruptcy suit for the money.

Also, I personally wont be rebooking via Expedia. Although they wouldn't refund me nor would any of the airlines accomodate me, Delta accomodated my best friend after they told me they couldn't. Now he has to cancel again and file a dispute with his CC company so he can rebook with me elsewhere

Good Luck!!

When you buy a ticket, whether it be through the airline directly or through a third party such as Expedia, your money is held by an airline ticket clearinghouse until you use the ticket. The airline does not get the money for your ticket until you go.

Usually, it is easy to transfer your ticket to another airline because airlines have agreements amongst themselves. Unfortunately, ATA has a long history of not having such an agreement with any other airlines.

At some point in time, you should be able to receive a refund or another airline might accept your ticket. I can't be any more specific than that and I'm sorry.

Sorry to say it but, right now, you're up the proverbial creek. ATA can't give you the refund because they don't have access to your money. Expedia can't help because they don't have your money.

In bankruptcy the ticket-holders get to divide up anything left over after company assets are sold and lien-holders are paid. Be glad you aren't the company that sold them jet fuel. You might only get back pennies on the dollar. You will need to follow reports in the media re what is going on. Watch for class action lawsuits for people in your position. ATA may be accused of misleading consumers like you regarding their solvency.

Sorry bout' your luck on this one, think about the companies that they owe THOUSANDS of dollars to?

It is one of those sonofabitch!! Moments that life is full of.

If you paid for them on credit card, some credit card companies protect you from this type of issued, but not a Visa/Debit card, you might check just in case.

Sometimes, other airlines will accept the tickets from an airline that went bankrupt.

You can file a motion with the bankruptcy court, you need a bankruptcy attorney to do it.

Unfortunately you are at the mercy of the airlines and booking agents. I know it sucks, but it true. I feel so bad for all these people, but unfortunately there is really not much you can do besides pray for the refund of your money.
