Will a Four Day Work Week help cut down gasoline costs?
Four day work weeks by US employers are the latest strategy to help their employees cut down on the cost of rising gasoline prices. Your feedback on this is appreciated.

First off, most of these people have kids and they would still have to leave work anyway to pick their kids up. Second, these businesses open four days a week? Their sales would drop off big time... Also, just because people have been given a free day out of the week, with the intention that they should stay home and not leave, doesn't mean they won't do it anyway... Look at Summer vacation... a perfect time to sleep in and catch up on much needed rest, instead, most people are out on the road for two weeks! (or in planes)

These people don't want to be cooped up in the house and American's gas problems will never go away until we as individuals, we as a people make a serious effort to curb excess gas consumption. However that means for many businesses which benefit from these unnecessary expenditures, they will see lower sales.

For instance, we don't have to go to the theatre Saturday night. If x million Americans cut that out of their weekly planner, that would free up millions of gallon of gasoline per week. If parents had their children ride the bus instead of picking them up themselves, that would save an additional several million gallons of gas. We can't do this alone. We need to ban together and make a collective effort at combating these prices.

only so long as you drive less than that same commuting distance on your day off

Provided you stay home on the fifth day rather than using it to run errands, you'd definitely save on gas.

No, I think people will still drive too much and with a 4-day work week our GDP will decline.

long-term GDP > current gas prices

probably, many companies use this strategy very successfuly

Cat
Of course it would. If you go to work 4 days a week instead of 5, that's 20% less gasoline spent for commuting.

it might 4 , ten hour days

But many business would not be as productive.
