They already have. Doesn't anyone remember the tens of thousands of "buyouts" that occured over the past couple years.
They are striking because they have unrealistic views of how the world works. As GM has already bankrupted, or off shored, all their suppliers, they have lost most of their best car buying customers. Now, with the strike, many more suppliers will be going bankrupt/closing their doors, which will mean even fewer customers. So, once again, the Union is demanding the demise of their own jobs.
GM (and Ford & Chrysler) have nearly 6 months of cars already built and sitting in parking lots waiting for buyers. Because of the UAW contract it is cheaper to keep producing cars that don't sell vs. slowing down production (UAW worker makes over 80% of take home pay if laid off, company pays the difference between 80% and unemployment) so this shut down is a blessing to GM.
All they have to do is start hiring new employees, there are hundreds of thousands of people out of work from manufacturing that would be HAPPY to make 1/2 of what the union gets without their benefits.
Someday soon the insanity of the union worker will become evident. |

The workers have probably demanded teh one thing GM will not offer. Job security. They are wanting the guarantee that all new models will be built here. |
