Will the U.S. government allow Ford Motor Company to go bankrupt?

idlebud
Will they allow them to fail? No.

Should they? Perhaps.

Why? Well, to answer that, scale the question down a bit. Should the U.S. government allow Tony's Pizza Parlor to go bankrupt?

If that sounds absurd to you but you also think the government should bail out Ford, Chrysler, etc because they're so large, I'd simply ask: what is the size threshold that says a company has gotten big enough to be propped up by the government?

Does anybody miss having DeSotos and Nash Ramblers and Studebakers to drive?

no unless someone srews up

I see no reason for the American tax payer to bail out a company that managed to drive itself into bankruptcy. Ford is still paying out big bonus to it's top people...they have made very little attempt to find a niche in the market for fuel efficiency. companies go under every day, because the screwed up and lose their edge. If we the people bail out Ford, the I intend to start a business and let the govt bail me out of my debt. I say no way...where do I vote?

poetic_lala
I don't think so..There'd be alot of people out jobless. hopefully not.

Two things. One, the government bailed out Chrysler (but let AMC die). Two, Ford is doing very well in Europe and has a decent market in Asia. I don't think Ford will go bankrupt. However, they need to give the USA the better cars they have in other parts of the world.

js
They will, they let many corporations do it

tonalc1
They can do Chapter 11,which means they're bankrupt but the company still operates.

Basically it's a government bail out. So yes, the government is allowing this.

Steve
They bailed Chrysler out. So I guess they'll bail Ford out too.

Prolly. I dunno.

Yes, Ford is just a company and as a matter of fact the government does most of its busness with GM.... So why would it matter if a company that doesn't hold many government contracts went bankrupt?

The American automobile Corps will become like Amtrak soon...because the Unions made promises to the thousands of employees when promises where still kept. They can't afford it now...but you can't lay off all those people.

Sunnydays
Theoretically, gov't is not supposed to interfere with the commerce of the country unless in dire situations. If Ford does end up going off the cliff, the gov't may put in some strategems to get the company back on its feet. I doubt that will happen, though.

SidTheKid
Of course it will! The U.S. government does not give a crap about anything or anybody!! It doesn't even care about itself anymore-look at the damn mess Bush and his buddies have made of everything. They lie to the American public about everything and get away with it as we sit around with our heads up our asses!! As long as they are lining their pockets with money the rest of the world can go to hell as far as they are concerned!!

Ford, bankrupt? Tell me more.

It is not the government's responsibility to bail out companies or corporations that make substandard products. As much as I love this country and would hate to see more people without a job, it is really up to Ford to start making more competitive vehicles. Foreign cars are out-selling American cars because they are better made and more affordable. Until Ford can start competing in the automobile market, they will continute to lose business to foreign companies. In order for the market to work and for the United States to keep growing, the government must stay out it.

Only Ford Motor Co. will allow itself to go
bankrupt, if it can't make quality vehicles at
affordable prices like its competitors. Of course,
there is always the greedy C.E.O.'s and other
officers of the company that could steal millions
of dollars like the Enron and Tyco scandals
