Mr. W
Will you get fired by talking salaries between co-workers?

Additional Details
My boss said that if we are talking about our salaries, that is immediately termination!

If it is against policy and the penalty is termination, yes. ~

erey21386
Techniclly you could because its against policy .

If it's a posted rule then it might be. However this is only when you're on the clock, if you and your co-worker go home and talk about the money you make over a beer then that is your time and they can't touch you unless you signed something saying that you would never talk about how much you make like that with the people you work with.

Normally however it's only when it's on company time, and when there's a way to prove it.

If it's not a posted rule you could also fight it if you did get fired, and go on unemployment.

aimz723
Probably because thats kind of a common rule but I don't think it is enforced very well at any workplace. Just keep it on the DL.

Neki
It depends on your company policy, some cares about it as its personal and some companies don't really mind.
My company doesn't mind those.

trashy
yes it can be a policy. either way its not good to talk about it. good way to make enemies.

In my workplace you can get into trouble for discussing it because they make you sign a confidentiality agreement at the time of hire. Did you sign one? Read the fine print. What did it say? Was it on your application form? Ask. Inform yourself. It is always good to know what you signed with anything in life.

Mizan
You may/may not get fired by talking about salaries with your co-workers; however, it depends on your boss. If you, for instance, tell your co-worker you make $20 an hour, but she only makes $15. You would feel good, but what about your co-worker. If this co-worker goes to your employer and dicusses this, what will be the outcome? You will most likely be fired or get called into the boss' office to lower your salary. Again, it will depends on your boss. KNOW YOUR BOSS!

Bandit R
I was hired at Wal Mart and they told us not to tell how much we are making,a lot of the new help is making more than the ones who have a lot more time in

King T
maybe if you are talking about someones salary other than the one you are talking with. I doubt they would fire you, they will probably just counsel you not to do that anymore,

well if that's your bosses policy I guess he can do it if he owns the business

Companies can set up most of their own rules, so yes....

A Landers
Probably not. If you are discussing someone elses that you should non know about, you may get into trouble.

no they can't
Many people will tell you that their company policy forbids discussion of salaries and a violation is a fire-able offense. Not so fast. There's this thing called the National Labor Relations Act Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act gives the vast majority of private sector employees the right to engage in concerted activities for mutual aid and protection. In order to exercise those Section 7 rights effectively, employees must be able to discuss workplace issues and information with their coworkers and with union organizers. The National Labor Relations Board has repeatedly recognized that the discussion of wages and other terms and conditions of employment is protected by Section 7. And the Labor Board has repeatedly held, over many decades, that employer rules that can be reasonably interpreted as restricting employees from discussing wages, rates of pay, salaries, breaks, discipline, work rules, and other terms and conditions of employment violate federal labor law.
