Without names! What is the benefit to society of large companies who pay low wages without pensions?
There is a trend in England through the 80's 90's and into 2000's of companies moving toward large numbers of low payed staff (and a very small number of very well payed staff) being created with what seems to be very low regard for social structure or welfare.
This seems to be the 'American way'.
It seems to me we are utilising 'social rules' to trap people into unfair conditions which will create both skill and age based problems in the future.
This is a system that will encorage people to 'give up' if we are not careful as a society.
Surely, we need to aim to encourage people, not discourage them, to support a work ethic system.
Additional Details
Socialism failed?
America and England (capitalist systems) are in deep recession with millions of unemployed and people sick with worry. The current social philosphy is to tend more toward socialisim in these countries.
China (communist) has massive cash reserves and made us all look crap with the olympics.
I am well payed - You clearly are! - Screw the rest! Your attitude is part of the problem! Who should be growing up here?

stuff they sell is cheap.
worse, as they get larger, they force other jobs to be transferred out of the country.
then they tell you, "It's good for consumers, prices are lower."

they put corporations out of business.
that's what happened to Rubber-Maid.
and others.
how is it good for consumers to have their jobs sent to some other country?

<<This is a system that will encorage people to 'give up' if we are not careful as a society.>>

you bet'cha. 60 years ago, there weren't any fast food places.
and you never saw food wrappers and drink cups on the sidewalks and streets.
but now, you pay to clean up -- your taxes pay the expenses of that business.
and people don't care as much any more.

this is were large corporations fiddle the benefits system by paying low wages knowing the government will have to pick up the tab and boost the income (with working tax credits) of the low paid.
whilst taking these backwards tax concessions the large corporations all so clocks up profit margins in the billions for the directors/shareholders (and can't afford livable wages for its employees)

Any benefit? Well, that's pretty easy. They provide wages for those people working. Pay without pension, it can be argued, is better than no pay at all.

A much more difficult question is whether the social costs of those corporations outweigh their social benefits (considering the infrastructure they tax and the possible argument that they are not really providing net job gains to the society because they kill companies that do provide livable wages through low prices). There is probably nobody in the world who can knowingly answer that question. I think it's a more of an opinion--what type of society that you prefer to have.

Hey, i like working 50 hours a week for 50 years to have very little. But am happy not chasing the latest fashion and material objects.

It all bollocks at the end of the day.

We started with nothing, you go with nothing.

It's the rich and wealthy, usually real awful selfish people that really do screw the world up!

Have a nice day!

BabyCat
As long as the wages are not below the minimum wage, what's your problem. Of course they could pay more people higher wages which would mean that they have to employ fewer people. This would result in an even bigger rich poor divide.

If you look at the annual accounts of these big companies and the % profit they make, generally it is between 5 and 10% of turnover. It wouldn't take much on an increase in wages to render them loss making. This results in bankruptcy. Remember Woollies and MFI

Sorry kido, socialism has failed world-wide. Even China is no longer socialist. All that's left now is the abject poverty in countries like North Korea and Cuba. Two countries that have resources whereby they do not have to live in abject poverty. Stop living in the past kiddo
