I work a night shift at Target and everynight we clock out we have to wait up front from anywhere to 10-30 minutes off the clock to be let out to go home. Should we not all be on the clock until they let us go home? I have tried to wait to clock out until they open the door but the manager said that was not allowed and said the reason we wait is for safety. If I work 5 days a week that is about 1 1/2 hours that I am not being paid for not much I know but this seems really unethical. Multiply that by 14 night employees and that is 21 hours a week Target is not paying. |

I agree with you. Everyone should clock out as they leave. I understand that they do not want people leaving because of safety but everyone should clock out at the same time. This issue should be brought up to lost prevention for it could be a lose for the company. By that I mean it can cost the company money in a suit. Think about that not just 21 hours a week but how many other stores are doing this. It could cost the company much more. This can be fixed by a small police change. By paying each of you that extra 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes the company can save money then having to go to court and paying lawyers and lost wages. Something like this maybe retroactive and they may have to pay wages for years past to employees. |

Speak to the HR dept. If they give you trouble file a claim with the Dept of Labor.
I would let them know outright that it is illegal to hold someone against their will. Since they are not paying you, you feel that you are being held hostage which is a criminal act.
I'm quite outspoken about my rights. |

I'm thinking that once you clock out you should be 'free' to leave. If not then your employer is sorta 'requiring' your presence. If an employer requires you to be on site, then they must pay you!
Suppose you were scheduled for the day off however a mandatory meeting was called. You arrived for the meeting which only lasted 37 minuets. The employer is required to pay you for 1 hour.
Now rest assured if you raise a huge stink over the current situation, more than likely you will be looking for a new job. Employers do not appreciate nor keep on the payroll employees who voice their opinions about bad business practices |

I agree, you should be paid or they should let you go when you clock off. If the y won't let you leave the store you could also scream deprivation of liberty and have them charged. |

I used to work there and was very very unhappy with them, but honestly. Find out the reason you arent allowed to leave? In my store im sure it would be b/c the doors are locked and coded so you are locked in all night..the morning shift manager or owner needs to come in and put in the proper codes to let you out. But ask why! Bring up your point!! Dont let everyone loose time!! |

I had a similar situation at an store I used to work at. I would always wait until my very last chance to clock out...usually though for me I only lost usually around 5 minutes.
I would definitely talk to your manager and if he/she will not fix you up tell them you want to talk to the district manager, or another higher up. You definitely deserve to get paid for waiting around.
You are losing considerable income and make sure you mention that when you bring it up with whoever. You should be paid for ever minute in that store. Good Luck. |

Companies are ridiculous like that.
Everyone at my work leaves at exactly 5PM. And the job I do, you have to assign yourself files, and they take anywhere from 5-20 minutes to complete. So I know that every person who walks out that door stopped working at least 5 minutes earlier. It's the opposite of what your company does but that's the breaks. You could find another job if it bothers you that much... I'm sure there's lots of unemployed people out there who'd gladly take that position. |
