i am currently working as an assistant manager for a very large retail store, my boss has a bee in his bonnet about staff taking lunch breaks and days in lieu from bank holidays worked, he also makes many excuses throughout the day to leave the store, many of the times it is to do with personal errands. i have mentioned this to him in the past as he has told me " if i didn't like it leave". i have considered going to my area manager about this but he is very unapproachable and gets on very well with my boss. not only that my area manager bullies people when a bad daily cash figure is given, shouting and swearing down the phone. any ideas please |

This is sheer abuse, and you are worth more than to work for this company i would find a better position i have heard this all before and the only way out is to leave let the bully boys pick on someone else they need one of these wistleblower programmes to work there and show the bully's for what they are ............sad insignificant little people. |

Record the swearing down the phone over a period of time.
Then resign and take them to an industrial tribunal citing constructive dismissal. |

Youn don't have to put up with anything in the workplace that constitutes bullying, unfortunately if you can't go above your bosses head because he is too pally with the area manager you really are on a losing streak, I have been self employed for about 30 years and when I was employed I had the same thing on several occassions with various employers, I just walked out, I know getting jobs are a bit difficult but remember you are working to live not to living to work. |

I can feel your tension as you write. This situation is going to make you ill. Get another job, you sound like a sensitive, intelligent person. When you are dealing with terrible people like this there is a tendancy to 'hang on' in the hope that the situation improves. It probably won't. Take it easy and look for a new job. |

Look for a better job. There ARE good employers out there that value staff members that actually know how to work, but you do have to go to the trouble of doing a thorough job search. Often times, the best place to start is your state's (if you live in the US) employment office. Most states have them and will teach you how to make a good resume and help you brush up on interview skills etc.

its not an area manager now issue its a HR issue since there are ethical issues now as well since they are friendly.
keep a record of any conversations or log when he leaves/comes back to the store; any harassing innuendo's, sayings, shouting, swearing etc. If the Hr manager doesn't do anything about or it there isn't one you can contact the state, or see a lawyer and file suit against the company for creating an unsuitable workplace enviornment |

Is their anyone else you can go to to talk about this, or can you only go to the area manager?
If you can only go to the area manager, I suggest going to him, he might not know what's going on and you may be supprised about how well he deals with your boss. Because they are good friends your boss is more likely to talk to and listen to the area manager then anyone else.
