Would it bother you?
If you discovered you were the most disliked person in your department. I work for a large organisation which has a customer service department. The manager of has put the "fear of god" in her staff and the general opinion company-wide is that she is not liked. Would it bother you if this was you and you found this out?

It would bother me but I think people like that don't really care what others think of them.

Black Orchid
Personally i would be very upset, but then i wouldn't be like that .
The power has obviously gone to the managers head
So i don't think she will care if people don't like her.
I hate people like that you get more out of your workers if you treat them right

Lucy
Yes, it would bother me, only because I feel a supervisor or manager doesn't have to be a jerk to get results from their employees. In fact having a jerk for a boss makes your employees only want to do less and not perform at their best. Having a boss that treats you like a competent human gets far better results. So yes I would say I wouldn't be happy if nobody in my work place liked me.

No. Usually that means that the person is doing their job. They are not there to 'make friends'... they are there to do a job. As long as she is doing her job without being disrespectful to people or violating any company policies, ..... then whether people 'like' her or not is a non-issue. It may just work out that the people she supervises have tough jobs and if she makes them do those jobs correctly that they will be resentful toward her. It's tough at the top, but somebody has got to do it. Maybe they should thank her instead of grumbling at her for ensuring that the job will still be there tommorrow just because of all the hard work she encouraged them to get done today. :o)

Absolutely not! Remember school days?
People that criticized others were always insecure in themselves and often jealous of the people they were making fun of.

In my opinion--it is an insecure person that needs the approval of others to perform well (in anything). If you're good at something--anything at all, people are going to dislike you. It's plain and simple.

On the other hand--a lesson could also be learned on the other side of this discussion. Attitude is everything--especially in business, and it's relatively easy to make people respect us as adults. Simply saying a kind word every now and then and demonstrating appreciation for others is usually enough to at the very east dilute downright resentment and jealousy.

As a leader in a professional organization--doing a great job is simply not enough--getting people to want to help you succeed is the key.
