I can't argue with that, but an employer has to balance employees' comfort with professional deportment. There are also studies done (which usually confirm what 99.99% of us know already) that potential new customers are more likely to be attracted to business with a culture more like their own. Suits and ties (or short pants) will be more comfortable with people dressed like they are -- in the case of seeking new business, with people dressed a little higher in status than the seeker is. When you're interviewing for a job, this is reversed; always dress one level higher than the job you're seeking.
