These kinds of items are called "loss leaders" - they don't make money on them, but the low prices get people to come into the store. Once people are in the store, they'll probably buy other things that the store does make money on, which will more than offset the loss for the ultra-cheap items. |

This is how sales work, brah. They drop the price of one thing, while they raise the price of a more demanded item. Also, you bought your toilet at a grocery store where the main product is food. The toilet paper is probably going to be higher than it should. |

Wal-Mart typically buys the cheapest items available from their wholesalers. Usually, the packaging isn't as shiny or made quite as well. If you go to Wal-Mart, you'll notice that most of their clothes aren't as great of a quality as those at Target (where I work, and there's a Wal-Mart next door) or other higher-end department stores.
My marketing teacher explained it this way... if Wal-Mart wants to buy Triscuits to sell to their consumer base, then they will want their packaging to be as cheap as possible. So, their boxes won't be made with the expensive shiny paper, but will be made with flat matte paper. Also, their Triscuits might be a little odd-shaped and not perfectly square. Basically, they sell what the other stores refuse to sell. In most cases, it doesn't matter because it all tastes the same anyway. |
