wildchild47236 | 100 points to everyone who answers this: check notarization? |
At work I work in the cash office and balance tills among many other jobs. Balancing the tills involves me putting the checks through a machine that prints a long number like.. 000000000913, for example, on a check that was written for $9.13.
What if;
Whaat if....
I accidentally allow a check for- say- $20.44 be notarized (Is this the right word?) as a check for 12.55?
On the back of the checks the machine at each register will print in ink the correct amount the customer paid with that check.
So what if!!
What if I let a check for 20.44 have the little numbers 0000001255 printed on it.
D:
Additional Details are you serious..
This is so much an accident.
dang.

That's not notarization, that's MICR Encoding. The Magnetic Ink characters are so automated equipment can read the amount of the check along with the account number and bank routing number.
So, every piece of automated equipment down the line will read the check amount as the number you encoded on the check. If it's wrong, most probably the wrong amount will be taken out of the person's checking account. If you know you made a mistake, they should have some blank pieces of paper that can be attached to the bottom edge of the check so the whole MICR line can be reprinted correctly.
I've actually had checks go through the entire system that were encoded incorrectly, usually only a few cents off. I'll catch them when my account will not balance. The bank will correct these. If the errors are large or frequent, your bank will probably go looking for who isn't doing their job correctly . . .
BTW, you can't give 100 point out and certainly not to everyone who answers! |

It depends on who uses the notarization and what they use it for. If it is an honest mistake it can probably be fixed. It's not like you did it deliberately or attempted to do anything illegal.
Simply explain that you were doing your work, as usual, and this happened. Can it be fixed? If so, how? If not, whoops. Sorry. Won't happen again.
I wouldn't worry so much about losing the job. Especially if you point out the mistake yourself and try to solve the problem. |
