14 year old having a debit card. What do you think.?
When it comes to money I am extremely responsible. When ever I get a gift card, I always check online what the balance is, before I buy anything with it. I dont go online to random websites and put my number in, I dont tell friends my number, I dont loose the cards, and I dont waste money buying usless junk. What do you think?
Do I sound responsible enough?

P.S. my parents would be signing the contract to get the card for me, so yes a 14 year old can have a debit card.

Congratulations on being 14. If you're as responsible as you say you are, you should have no trouble managing a card. The good thing about debit cards is that you cannot go into debt, and they have no interest. For extra safety however, try setting a maximum transaction amount, or maximum transactions in one month. And I wish I were you, I buy way too much junk off eBay.

They might be able to have a debit card, but as a parent I still would not allow it. The concept of a bank account for a teen is to save money not spend it.

you know, age is not a sign of maturity. there are some 14 year olds that act like theyre 5 and then there are others that can be mistaken for adults.

the point is that 14 is the midpoint for people. its in between adult and child. i think that kids can carry around a debit card. i think its actually safer than cash in some cases, but not always efficient. if you, a 14 year old or anyone else, want to just get a soda, then a debit card isnt necessary. what im trying to say is that kids shouldnt rely on this card but it is nice to have and you know its secure if its lost. just keep the pin to yourself.

good luck, hope it helps

i think it's totally fine, as long as you're responsible. I got my card at 14, i'm just over 15. I always check my balance before going to the store, i usually dont like spending much at one time, and I always tally up prices before i pay. i also had a part time job a while ago for my own income.
if you know how to be responsible with your money, and have an idea of how to earn it, i would say go ahead and get a debit card, it makes buying your own stuff easier ;)

Teen checking account comes with a debit card.

A real debit card (ATM check card) is what gives you access to the money in your checking account.

My daughter has had her own account since she was 13.
I put her allowance into her bank account and she uses her own ATM check card to pay for purchases at stores, etc.

Works fine as long as you are responsible and don't overdraw your account plus it gives you a "head start' in the banking world.
Instead of opening your first checking account when you are 18 you have had one since you are 14 and that gives the bank a longer time period to evaluate you.

Some 40 year olds still max out their credit cards and have to wait until their next pay check to have money in their bank account.
I had a debit card since around the same age, probably younger as my mom got it for me, I didn't even ask for it, but I never used it for anything other than going to an ATM.

It depends how you are taught and brought up; whether or not you are responsible.

A debit card is different than a credit card since you actually have to have money in your bank account to pay for it.

I had one at that age but i didn't use it much, but it is good to have for emergencies

If you were my kid - it'd be fine with me. But the card would have to be attached to your OWN bank account, not mine. That way, there's not way to "use" money that's not there, or draw someone else into debt.

Man, lucky. I'm fourteen in a week, and a debit card sounds nice. Ah, well I could ask them for it, as a birthday present. I don't know. I'm more of a cash person, and I'm only allowed to put money into my bank account. I think my parents are kind of sexist, because they'll get my brother a debit card, but I guess they don't trust their 4.0 gpa daughter, because of a little texting incident... but that's it.

Hmm, I think you deserve it if you're that responsible.

There is nothing wrong with that, everyone's situation is different. I had my first debit card when I was 11! My father was an OTR driver at the time and my name was on the Bank Account. I paid the bills while he was gone. He trusted me and knew I was a wise spender/saver altogether. Some kids have the responsibility to obtain...however others may not. It just depends on certain situations, but I think you will be fine. Dont fret! Good luck and CONGRATS! Its going to be a new experience and prepare you better for your future expenses!
