Zachary L | $1600 Credit Card Debt.... help please? |
Alright, so I've been bad with my credit since the beginning of my last relationship. Brainfart.
Anyways, so my credit is fairly bad and I really want to get myself out of debt but I can't seem to really fix this problem. I'm currently around $1600 in credit card debt. Once card is at about 950: limit 1000. Another is at 654, limit 500: lots of late payments. Yeah, I know. I'm really bad with my payments because when I do pay my cards I'm left with no cash in my pocket for gas or food and then I go and put more on my cards because of it. I'm horrible and I realize I need to budget but I really need some help with it. I make about 350-400 dollars every paycheck biweekly.
Anyone.. please help. I dislike the fact that I have 2 cards and have 2 seperate payments and paying about 300 out of each paycheck to cover them. Leaving me with basically nothing for 2 weeks.
Personal Loan to cover pay the cards and only have one payment to really worry about? |

See if your bank will give you a line-of-credit to pay off your credit card bills. This way, your interest rate will be half of what they are on your cards.
Then, cut-up one of the cards. Use the other one only when necessary.
This next step requires discipline...budget your money to pay off your debt as quickly as possible. By paying only the minimum balance, you will keep accumulating interest and that is the vicious cycle that keeps many people in debt.
I know you're not going to like this answer but it is the truth. If you are finding it difficult to pay for gas and food after paying down your debt, you can't afford to own a car. Sell the car and use public transportation for a year or so. Pay off your debts and accumulate some savings. Once you have done that, and you feel you need a car, then shop around for a car. But for now, a car is a financial burden that it doesn't sound like you can afford. |

Opt for a debt consolidation loan: The easiest method of getting a debt consolidation loan is to utilize the equity of your home. Equity of your home is calculated and determined by the difference in the amount you have paid and the amount you owe. If the amount you have paid is more than the amount due, you can use it as collateral. This allows you to borrow money on lower interest rates. Besides, you also get tax benefit on this type of loan. Consult your tax advisor before opting for this loan. |

I'm in the same situation right now, I'm about to turn 21, well, I was in the same situation.
I paid off my credit card and just finished paying for a vacation to Jamaica. :)
Anyway, to your question, I would very much recommend a second source of income, or a change in primary source of income.
I went looking for a better job and got it. You shouldn't be just stuck with what you've got.
By the way, I am a full time student in college, and I play in a band, AND I have a girlfriend that I see regularly. So time/schedule is not an excuse in my opinion. |

Getting into even more debt is not going to help your situation. You need to bring in more of an income. Get a second job if possible. Sell things you don't need. Do what you have to do to at least make the minimum payments each month. |

1. Pay off your highest rate cards/debts first. STOP USING CREDIT CARDS and pare them down. Revolving credit is a kiler to your budget.
2. Contact your debtors and see if you can negotiate a lower rate of interest in return for discontinuing use of the card.
3. Some agencies offer debt counseling at no charge. Check with your local social services agencies and other non-profits in the area to see if they can help or provide referrals.
Good luck.

Firstly ignoring the problem wont help. Call the credit card companies and explain the problem and try to make an arrangement. Then cut up the card. Ask the credit card company to reduce your limit to the closing balance... tell them that if they allow any purchases in excess of the limit you will not be held responsible. The limit is there for a reason.
Finally the interest rates on a personal loan will be much less than credit card limits. Take one out - pay the cards and cut them up. You obviously cant handle them so you dont deserve one.
Take responsibility for your own actions, limit your spending to what you can afford. you are living beyond your means |

1600 doesnt sound too bad. Just call the credit card company and explain your situation. They can be very understading sometimes. make sure to keep up with at least the minimum payment because late fees are NOT GOOD.
how old are you? |

cut your cards up and call the company to work out a payment plan. don't let them intimidate you either. they will always act like its a dyer emergency to get their money. stay calm.
beware of debt consolidation agencies, they don't help. just cost you more money. |

im not judging, im just assesing ok. well you are obviously spending beyond your means. 3-400 bi weekly is pretty weak for that debt load. The first thing to do is pay both cards when they are due! Paying the minimum only prolongs the process but is better than no payment at all. It is better to pay the min or even less on time, than not at all, so you avoid encuring late and overlimit fees. Creditors will see that you at least made the effort to make payments on time and not just ignore your debt. Make yourself a budget and stick to it. You might have to live tight for a year, but that is nothing compaired to the consiquences of bad credit following you for years and years. Trust me, I budgeted and got rid of $9000 in debt. I lived off of ramen noodles and crackers for a year and a half. I quit going to bars, needlessly waisting gas, buying clothes, music, dvd's and just quit spending money in general so I could take care of my problem. But when it was all over, I was out of debt, back in good credit standing, AND 20 pounds lighter. Good luck! |
