Stop spending, start paying down your debt, start saving for retirement, increase your income. That's a lot of debt for someone your age who should be about to retire. Seek debt credit coucelling so they can help you out. |

Be careful about accepting settlements from your creditors. What they don't always tell you about that, is that is a creditor settles your debt, and you get out of paying more than $600, you have to declare that money as income on your taxes. So, if you can settle your debt for $15,000 between all of your creditors, you will roughly have to delcare an additional $15,000 (the amount you were forgiven for ) as income. |

there is no other way around it if you don't have the money. If you have 15,000 of it, usually credit card companies will settle on 50% if you just want to close it out. Otherwise, if you don't have the money or any money in your house, loans and bankruptcy is your only choice. |

He calls it the Debt Snowball. You put all of your debts out on the table from smallest to largest. You start by paying only the minimum on all but the smallest. On the smallest you put as much as you can till it is payed off. Then you take that amount of money and add to the second smallest debt. And so on. Pretty soon you are paying large sums on your debt and they are going away one at a time. Cool. |

Sounds like you need to better budget yourself.
Keep track of what you are using your credit cards for, I can pretty much guarantee that 90% of it is not needed to survive, and was not an emergency situation.
You need to pay down your credit cards, and lower the limit each time that you do so that you can't use the newly available credit.
If you don't take charge now, you aren't going to be able to stop working any time soon. If you just stop paying, the card companies will take you to court, and you may lose more than you would if you just claimed bankruptcy...
If you adamantly do not want to claim bankruptcy, then consider paying off the cards using a consolidation loan. It will set your payments over a set time period, all of your current cards will be closed, and you will be on the way out of debt.
Solid Advice - Cut up your cards so you don't use them for everyday things. If you can't pay off the balance at the end of each month, you shouldn't be using them... |
