The statue of limitations is now 10 years. And yes, after that your credit file is clear. Of course there are people out there who will clear your credit (illegally) anytime you want for a fee of around $500.

Any item except for public records stay for 7 years, unless you dispute them and the source that reported them fails to reverify them after you dispute them.

You can dispute negative items using the free credit repair kit here: http://www.expert-credit-advice.com/free_credit_repair.htm

Negative items stay on your report for 7 years from the last reporting. The bad thing about that is that a credit card can report at any time during that 7 years, and then it could stay on your credit for 7 years from that day. It could keep repeating if they wanted it to.

you can get a free credit report yearly from freecreditreport.com and then you will know exactly what your report says. you can also check to see if something is incorrect. you only have to pay if you want your credit score

Negative items stay on your credit report for 7 years; bankruptcies for 10.

My entire FACE is a negative credit report.

Gremlin's answer is correct.

Yes, it is true. After 7 years, check your credit report. If it is still there, contact the credit bureau to take it off. Sometimes collection agencies use the date the debt is assigned to the collection agency instead of the date the bill was incurred and you can dispute that. Check out this link for more help

Negative information stays on your credit report for 7 years from the date of reporting.

Mariposa
Yes, items reported to the credit bureaus stay on your report for 7 years, after that it drops off. Depending on your state's statue of limitations, you can still be sued for the bill even after it falls of your report.
