I had always thought six years was the limit.
You might want to check that with Citizens Advice Bureau |

If you are in the United States the answer is that they have a right to request repayment but NO RIGHT TO USE THE COURTS TO ENFORCE DEBT COLLECTION under statute of limitations existing in every State of the Union. Without the right to sue you need only to laugh them off and let them know they did not find a sucker.
YOU MUST NOT REVIVE THIS DEBT AND GIVE IT NEW LIFE...This can be done by making a payment on the old debt. You cannot admit or otherwise acknowledge this as a legitimate debt for the same reasons. ALL YOU SAY IS THAT YOU OWE NOTHING AND KEEP REPEATING THIS.
If you are pushed, push back with a threat to file a slander lawsuit and or report under the Fair Debt Collection laws.
With these clowns you can be as rude, vulgar and disgusting as you wish. Match their behavior with your own.
LET THEM KNOW YOU WILL NOT BE COWERED OR INTIMIDATED INTO A DEBT THAT NO LONGER EXISTS. |

Depends what country you are in.
In Australia it is six years for contractual debt. Even with court judgement the max is 12. |

they can try
there is no limit to the time at which a debt is payable. what there is, and a lot of the previous answerers have fallen into the mistake of quoting this, is a time limit after which they cannot ask a court to force you to pay it. That limit is 6 years after your last communication about it. So if you talk to them, admit you owe it, the 6 years starts again.
this is why stuff falls off the end of your credit history report after 6 years, no point reporting older stuff as its not legally enforcable. |

If you haven't acknowledged the debt, it's unenforceable. Just ignore them. If they make a nuisance of themselves, see your local Citizens Advice. They will sort them out without acknowledging the debt. |

In the UK, no. I believe the cutoff is 8 years.
Certainly nowhere near 15. |

Is there truely a debt that you have not paid ? Rather than running away from you obligations, if there is indeed an amount owing, thet you did owe why not just pay what you owe. There seems to be too many people these days who just run up alot of debt that they just walk away from. Is it any wonder we have the current economic issues today |

Your debt are sold after 6 years to other collection companies, if you reply to their letters it is reopened but if you ignore them it will go away - they are chancing their luck. This is UK. |

I expect a debt stands for ever, even when you die. Has it been difficult to get hold of you? Have you been trying to evade the debt or your creditor? Has the creditor proof that they have been sending requests for payment? The statutory limitation thing of 7 years is for keeping records or making complaints, I think. I would seek advice from a qualified person.
Have a look here (it's still abit confusing) Seems the legal time limit is six years (this is for the creditor to get the money by legal means) but the dbet stands until it is paid or written off. http://www.payplan.com/debt-library/joint-and-several-liability-the-limitation-act-1980.php |
