Accidentally applied for 2 credit cards...?
I am 18, just out of high school, and looking to build a good credit score by making smart decisions on how I use my credit. I currently have a cell phone w/ a contract and a student credit card w/ 0% financing on up to $250, which I use for small purchases and pay all or most of it off each month.

I need a new MacBook for college, so I applied for the Apple sponsored credit card on their website, but since I have little credit I was only approved for $450, which obviously isn't enough to cover the expenses. So, I clicked "cancel" thinking I was not accepting the card, when in fact I had accepted it.

During the time I thought I had not accepted the previous credit card, I applied for a Citi student credit card and was approved for up to $3k.

So, I accidentally applied and got 2 credit cards in the same day. How will this affect my credit score and what should I do? Since, I know you get points deducted for both applying and closing cards.

Use the Citi card to work with, cut the Apple sponsored card up with a pair of scissors, this way you can't use the apple card but as you are not cancelling it you don't get points deducted. Admittedly you have got points deducted for applying for it but there's no use crying over spilt milk, be a good credit card user and it won't really matter anyway.

I don't think just this will effect your credit score. . Pay off the Citi student credit card each month if you can. The main thing is don't let the balance get out of control.

Your credit score start lowing so STOP requesting credit cards.....Every time any bank revise your credit they took 15 point of your credit balance......

If you are not interest in one of the credit card, call customer service and cancel it, they will request to destroy the card.....Only keep the one with the hight balance......If you have 3 credit cards do not start using the 3 credit cards..... Use the one with the less interest......

I highly recommend you to request a payment protection plan with all your credit cards....

When I lost my Job all my credit card has that benefit and works, BUT please be wise with Citi card, there great BUT sometime they want to be smart and if for any reason you get ill or something this protection plan will paid the credit card and your credit will stay intact.....

Protect your credit and call payment protection plan really works

Cancel one of them immediately!! you sound like you are not ready to control them all at the same time.

You should leave them both open. Since you've already been approved for them, you might as well keep them! You've already had a small amount of 'points' deducted from opening these accounts, so why deduct more by closing them? Just use the Citi card to buy your MacBook, and don't use the Mac card, but leave it open so it will look good on your credit. Also, make sure there are no hidden annual fees on the cards that will pop up on your account without you realizing it!

The interest rate might be a little high on the Citi card because you're young, so try to pay off the bill as soon as possible. You can waste alot of money on interest by just paying the minimum payment. *Paying the minimum payment each month NEVER works!* On most minimum payments, you're only paying the interest off and not lowering the original amount.

You really don't have anything to worry about as long as you don't run them up, and try to pay them off as soon as possible. Building credit is a slow process, but it's worth it later on! Good luck!

Just use one, or even both. Pay on time, and above the minimum payment. That way your credit will increase. If you cancel one of the cards, you credit will go down even more.

Just remember that you have both cards there, but don't necessarily have to use both! I have the same 0% under $250 too, and another card. But I only carry one around with me so I don't have multiple bills each month.

I have been in a similar situation that i let get out of control. a word of advise, ALWAYS pay on time, NEVER let the balance get over half of your limit, and be very very careful walking into malls :) it is very tempting to have "free" money in your purse! if you make wise decisions, this will not affect your credit score. your score is only very minimally affected by applying for a credit card if you don't abuse it.

Just pay them on time, try not to pay late and pay a little more than your minimum balance, you shall be fine.

kenyagroov
You will have a small deduction in points if you close either of the cards voluntarily. However if you keep both cards and then dont use one of them then after a period of non-use then the card issuer will close the card or put a freeze on it. That wont affect your credit score if they do that. If you chose to keep both cards - please use them wisely and dont get boggled down in credit debt. Dont get your card with a 3k limit past $1499. Once you have half of the credit used then creditors start worrying. Good luck to you.

Don't worry about it ... cancel the card you don't want ... no problem.
Just worry about not borrowing more than you can pay off ... and make your payments on time ...

Dirty Dave
Charge a small amount on each one and pay it off COMPLETELY - ON TIME every month. Your credit score will go up.

Cancel the one you don't want..no penalty!!! Tp keep your credit good..just keep your payments on time..that is all they care about.
Be careful..credit card co's will send you mulitple cards..they don't care...put you in debt where you cannot possibly pay for them.
