This is a common question, if you want the job do the credit check, if you don't then move on.
I am not an employer, but they did a credit check for my job, and I understand their perspective. If you deal with money or are working in finance would you want to give your money/personal information to a company with a bunch of debt ridden desperate employees? No you would not. |

This is very common when companies are looking to hire people now.
If I wanted the job, I would have told them go ahead. |

This is VERY common - especially if the job involves handling money or any type of finance. You may also be surprised to know many HR groups also look up your MySpace or Facebook account before extending an offer. |

Hope you have another job interview lined up, cause that last one tossed out your application.
Any employer has a right to check ones credit score, especialy if the job requires back ground checks or you are going to handle cash transactions, or anything to do with finance.
Section 604(a)(3)(A) of the FCRA permits this practice as per: (NOTE section B)
In general, any consumer reporting agency may furnish a consumer report under the following circumstances and no other:
In response to the order of a court having jurisdiction to issue such an order, or a subpoena issued in connection with proceedings before a Federal grand jury.
In accordance with the written instructions of the consumer to whom it relates.
To a person which it has reason to believe
(A) intends to use the information in connection with a credit transaction involving the consumer on whom the information is to be furnished and involving the extension of credit to, or review or collection of an account of, the consumer; or
(B) intends to use the information for employment purposes; or
(C) intends to use the information in connection with the underwriting of insurance involving the consumer; or
(D) intends to use the information in connection with a determination of the consumer's eligibility for a license or other benefit granted by a governmental instrumentality required by law to consider an applicant's financial responsibility or status; or
(E) intends to use the information, as a potential investor or servicer, or current insurer, in connection with a valuation of, or an assesvsment of the credit or prepayment risks associated with, an existing credit obligation; or
(F) otherwise has a legitimate business need for the information
At least they asked you up front, many don't ask first, they just get the prospective employee to sign a job application which will contain a clause that the applicant permits a credit check (sneeky ones do this).
Hope this answers your question. |

It is being done by many companies nowdays. If it is part of their hiring process, I would have definitively accepted to get the job since there is nothing to hide or worry about my credit. |

It depends on the job you are applying for. If you applied for being a burger flipper at McDonald's, then I think that would seem a bit fishy. But if you are applying for a bank teller then it would be perfectly acceptable. It's pretty common nowadays for any job that has to do with finance, record keeping, confidential information, or even cash handling, to ask your credit to be run, but it isn't limited to those types of jobs either nowadays. |

I would never give my social security number over the phone so they could run my credit report. If they want to hire you, let them do it the old fashion way and fill out an application. |

Normal for any decent job today. Why? If you are in heavy financial problems you are more likely to how should we say abscond with funds, fake time sheets etc in order to improve your financial situation. Sorry they have been burned too many times. If there is no problem with a bank or a CC company looking into it why not an employer? By saying no, would say goodbye to that job |

That is actually increasingly common - but it shouldn't happen at an initial interview. |

Then you will not be getting that job.
It is very common for employers to pull your credit. Especially if you work in a job around money, credit card number, social security numbers - other sensitive identifying information or merchandise that is easily stolen. If you have a poor credit history - that is an indication that you have money problems and an inducement to steal or embezzle from them or from clients/customers. A bad credit score can prevent you from being hired.
Many companies will also have you take a drug test.
Some will also do a criminal background check.
In my line of work - credit check, criminal back ground check and drug screen are very common. |

When I was in school, went to an interview class and this was discussed. I have also read somewhere where they will check out where you live. Does it look nice on the outside...that kind of stuff, they will look in your car and see if you have alot of junk in it. I seen a one of my old boss' check to see how the person got to the interview...was some one in the car with them... |

I agree with you 100% . What the hell does that have to do with things.
If I NEEDED the job then you gotta go with the flow as this is becomming more common.
If I was the person hiring you I'd hire you on that response alone. |

Get ready for Big Brother, that's all I have to say.
I have no doubt it's common, but yes, you're right, it's an invasion of your privacy.
Yes, I understand that it's a good indicator for them 'perhaps' of what kind of person you are, how responsible you are, etc.
But there are other things that would help them determine this too, that would be (IMO) going to far; seeing all your medical records, DNA sample, taking a look at your checking account history, criminal history of all your relatives for the last century, etc.
But the direction this stuff is heading makes me very nervous. |
