Advice needed. I feel hopeless, but there's got to be a way out. Any ideas for a strong future?
My goal is to own a consignment shop. I defaulted on my college loans years ago, but have been paying them off with no late payments. My college loan is my ONLY debt. (no car payment, no credit cards, etc) It is the only thing I've ever "screwed up" as far as lateness. My credit is horrible. The last I checked my credit score was around 420, but has continued to steadily drop over the past few years. I have called credit counsellors, but I can't afford them. I'd really like to open my own business in the next few years, but it really just seems impossible. I feel like investors and banks would laugh me out the door due to my credit. Is there any way around the credit issue if you are an otherwise trustworthy person or am I really doomed like all the information I've found? Any advice would be great. Any reasonable plans of action would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Work at building the credit up, you need more credit that you pay on time, everytime. At leat 2 other merchant accounts. Go to YOUR bank and take out a secured loan for say two hundred dollars and pay on it every month never being late. Get a CC, not Capital One they report funny, but an Orchard account and again every month on time.

Keep the balance down to 30% or less of the CC limit at all times.

Build your credit then your business.

Good luck

Yes the Orchard card will cost you a little to own but just remember you do not have the credit to get one of the great offers yet.

You can re-establish good credit with secured credit cards and/or collateralized loans. No problem, just have to have the $ or assets up front.... Good luck, you'll get it done if you work hard enough!

the problem is you are paying an old debt which has been chged off. that makes it show current everytime u make a payment, and from the sounds of it you dont have any current credit history. i have seen this many times over the years. get a secure card and use it to establish a track record, see if you can settle with the college loan, it its federal you must pay it, anything else might settle for pennies on the dollar, ask them and get it in writing and then pay it rebuild your credit and some day it will work for u gl

no body
really, unless you get some long odds in your favor, all you can do is rebuild your credit and get rid of that debt. until then, banks will be laughing you out the door. seriously.

Search on the internet for keywords like "credit repair." Just collect advice, don't sign up for anything. Some of those are scams.
Here's a government site which should have reliable information: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/repair.shtm
Having too many credit cards lowers your credit rating too. You need to limit yourself to a couple of accounts and pay them off in full each month. That starts to establish a reliable record.
Good luck!

I am somewhat in your same boat. My husband and I are trying to buy a house, but both of us have been climbing out of a endless pit for the last several years because of our credit. The best advice I can give is just pay your bills on time. If you dont have credit cards just keep up your student loans by paying on time every month. I did that for several months with my credit cards and my score started to climb back up. Now that I got my credit cards back in order my husband co-signed on a car with me so that will help me in the long run to. You might want to also pull your credit report and look to make sure there are no discrepinces and if there are dispute them. I did that last year and found out that someone else's account ended up on my credit report. Turns out the account was not tied to a social security # and there was a gal with my same name living in the same city who's stuff got loaded onto my report. I immediately called and had it removed. You can run your report for free once a year at www.annualcreditreport.com You might be surprised at what you find on there if you check it from time to time. I have a service through Bank of America where I can look at my credit report and score as often as i'd like plus it will send me emails when something gets added, or someone makes a inquiry to my report. The service is 12.99 a month and I think its totally worth it.
