Call the company, tell them you want to close the account...most of the time, they will negotiate to keep you...then, ask for a much lower rate. |

If you have another credit card which you can use as an emergency card, then you can decide which card to keep. For the best credit rating, it is recommended that you keep the credit card you have the longest history with. So, if you have a card that you've had for 10 years, keep that one versus the new card you just got last month.
Also, if you plan on using the card, it is best to keep it open, rather than closing it now and re-applying again in a few months. Most credit card companies won't open a new account if you've had one in the last 6 months. Also, any history from your first account will not affect your new account, so you may be worse off credit-history-wise. |

Close it. You're out of debt, so stay that way. |

You do not have to cancel your account just because you paid it off. The only reason you would do that if it is practical for you to cancel it. Do you have to many cards? Is it a department store card vs a credit card company? If it is a dept. store you will never get a good interest rate -- cancel it. There's alot of competition in this market now and if you paying a high interest rate get rid of it. Otherwise, hold on to it in case of emergency and pay it off every month so you don't have to pay interest. |

Keep it just in case. You could also charge something cheap and make the minimum payment every month to help establish your credit. It's much better to make payments instead of paying it off completely. Or at least pay half one month, and the rest the following month. |

keep it.
sometimes emergencies come up. whether it be a household emergency ie: tv fails, heating system etc. family emergency where there is a death or illness and you have to travel. things like that always happen when you don't have a pocket full of cash so having back-up like a credit card with a zero balance is a very good thing to have. i have one that i don't touch just for those reasons. |

It depends. Do you have alot of credit cards? If no. Then use it monthly and pay it off. That will keep your credit rating in good steading and make it better. If you have lots of them, greater than five, close it. |
