Am I doing the right thing by not having a credit card?
I am in my mid-20s & I never had a credit card. I've always managed money well & I'm always getting pre-approved offers, but I've declined them. My friends look at me like I'm from another planet. Everyone has credit cards, they say. I just don't feel a need for them. If I don't have the cash to buy something, then I either don't need it or can't afford it. End of story. I guess I don't want to get caught in the credit card trap of high interest rates. I think I do fairly well of living within my means. I don't like the dangers of immediate satisfaction that credit card companies try to dazzle you with. Am I right in feeling this way?

Absolutely! You may only be 20ish but you are wise beyond your years. Congratulations on having a level head on your shoulders. When you go to buy a house, you'll have a wonderful credit history. (You can gain credit by paying your phone bill, utilities, trash, etc, rent)

If you feel that you may have problems with being responsible using a credit card, then yes you are doing the right thing.

But consider this to have the very best credit score and profile people need 3 credit card accounts (revolving) with balances below 30% of your limits and 2 cars, boats, homes, furniture, computers or personal accounts (installment) all with good long pay history's.

I myself have 3 cards that I use every month for just about everything I buy and pay them off before the due date. In the last 24 months I have raised my score over 150-points and made $1,000.00 in cash back rewards, not bad for using someone elses money for free.

Mr. Naked
You need to have a credit card and use it because it will build a credit rating for you. Without a credit rating you will have trouble financing a house some day.

I have a credit card with a $20,000.00 limit. I use it for traveling and only put on it what I know I can afford to pay for when I get the bill. It makes it easier for traveling and is safer then using a debit card for everything. The big bonus is that it is a rewards card and I get cash back for making the purchases even though I've never paid a cent of interest on it. The cash rewards can be used to pay part of the balance, be sent to you in a check or be used to purchase gift cards for different places (these I use as gifts). If you think that you might be tempted to spend money you don't have then don't get one but using one correctly can help your credit score also.

It depends on what you want to do in your life.

If you ever want to buy a house, then establishing credit history is important - though you can do this by getting a car loan or other lines of credit. However, you do have the right idea. Paying for things with money you actually have is much better than going into debt. If you find that you cannot manage spending using a credit card, then it is better to not have one.

I get a lot of free airfare and hotel rooms by using my card. But I always pay it off too.

It's ok if you don't have a credit card but you should have something in your life that is earning credit for you, i.e. a car, furniture payments, bills...etc.

dobranoc
I believe you need at least one or maybe two credit cards, so you can built your credit. Doesn't mean spend the money, just be responsible.

src50
They are good for two things:
1. Building a credit history.
2. Emergency use.

Nothing wrong with credit cards if you don't misuse them. It is people's misuse, not the cards, that are to blame for all the credit card woes.

Yep, don't do it unless very disciplined and pay off total every month, don't exceed limits, as they will extend it to keep you in debt. Use only for emergencies...if you have unpaid debt, you won't sleep at night..

You are being foolish. Having a credit card doesn't mean you don't pay the bill every month, or that you buy things you can't afford. When you have a credit card, you get a free, no-interest loan (assuming you pay the bill in full every month), plus you get free benefits, like airtline mile frequent flyer points. Also, you need a credit card to buy things online, where you can get better prices.

There are also alot of things you need a credit card for, like hotels, rental cars, etc. How can you possibly be in your mid-20's and never have done any of these things???

MOST IMPORTANTLY, you build up your credit rating, so you will be able to get a good car loan or mortage when you need it.

Yes. You are doing the right thing.

don_hepburn
You are doing excellently. You might consider having one card if you think you ever will need to:
1) reserve a hotel room
2) rent a car
3) make an airline reservation
4) buy tickets online
