goldyn graham | Am I going to be forced to live in a cardboard box? |
I will graduate in 2 weeks with a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling. Yes, this is a great accomplishment, but it has come with a hefty pricetag of about $90,000 (undergrad debt included).
Unfortunately, my parents never had the important "these are loans you will have to pay back someday" talk, and I irresponsibly racked up serious debt. I have private and federal loans and they are all starting to come out of deferment and I am scared to death!! Even with my Master's, I am entering one of the lowest paying professions on the face of the planet, and there is NO way I can even come close to paying the minimum monthly payments (one consolidated loan itself has a payment of $1800/mo.). In addition, I will have a $250/mo. loan payment (to my mom) for paying off $10,000 worth of credit card debt.
I don't even know where to begin and I fear the worst: garnished wages, damaged credit (which is really good right now), and not being able to survive.
Any sincere advice? |

Be proactive! Contact your lenders and express you concerns. See if they can arrange lower payments or forbearance. They are more likely to work with you now than if you go into default. |

If your loans are federal stafford loans or loans by the government then you can call them and they will reduce your payment. There is something called an 'income contingency plan' that they use for people who can not pay they're payment but are willing to try. You can also apply for a forbearance, which will temporarily allow you to stop making payments for up to a year. |

Why don't you try for positions in your field in Canada? Alberta, British Columbia, etc. are so short of professional medical staff. You would like Canada, especially Alberta. Be brave and give it a try. Our money is almost at par!
PS: From where I sit, there would be no shortage of clients!! |

I don't have any advice for you but to say I truly sympathize with you. I had a friend that I watched rack up $84,000 in student loans to get an RN degree, only to find out in her area $24.00 an hour is all that a new grad paid out. She is still living at home with her parents to try to pay it back.
While your credit is good, try to shop around for a better rate. I have a feeling that you are in a very, very bad loan just from your payment alone, not knowing any details about it.
I wish you luck. |

Hi there,
You will want to consider starting a business on the side. The one I know about is not a scam ; it is certainly not get quick rich.
If you are sincere in your desire to get rid of that debt....while pursuing your Profession, please email me and we can take it from there. Please be sure to state your geographic location in your email.
Oh - you can't be afraid of working hard.
But - in 2-3 years you can be earning $5000/month part-time. In 2- 5 years you can be earning $100,000 per year...part-time.
Whatever you choose, don't panic. Things have a tendency to work out. |
