Am I reponsible for Mom's debt when she dies?
My Mom has a couple credit cards and is about 12,000 in debt. Although I am not a joint owner of the card they have had me as an authorized user for years and in fact have issued me
a card in my name. Would those debts then be passed to me when she would pass away? Her home is no longer in her name and in fact has been in my name and 3 others for 4 and a half yrs. She owns furniture and very little jewlery.....He
assists are only about 1000 in cash and she did take 10,000
to pay off funeral almost a year ago? Would they go after
that money that the funeral director has been paid already?
Again i am only an authorized user on her 2 credit cards.
Please advise. Thanks,

No, you are not. An authorized buyer can use the card, they are not responsible for paying the card. They won't go after the money the funeral director has been paid. Any debts unpaid upon her death would go to her estate--which would pay them, if anything is available. The creditors would need to be notified upon her death, you cannot use the card when she passes away. ***

No, some credit card bank accounts have a cancelation due to death insurance (IDK the legal term sorry :-( ) when the person dies his or her debt gets cancelled. You can always ask this directly to your bank, I would say that's to quick to go to a lawyer like someone advice here.

you should send all creditors a copy of the death certificate as soon as you have it.

Authorized users are not liable for debt repayment. Unless you open an estate and you are named executor the account will be classified as uncollectable. There appear to be few assets so opening an Estate wouldn't be necessary.

DAS
You shouldn't be, but you should ask these questions to a lawyer, who can help you figure out this situation.

Hi,
I used "Credit Solution" to settle my debt and avoid bankruptcy. They managed to reduce my debt up to 58%.It's legitimate.I came across this company on NBC News Special Edition.Check it out here:

To avoid any confusion, I would have my name immediately removed from those accounts.

When someone dies with debt, then that person's estate is responsible for payment of the debt, by selling what ever assets are available. Doesn't sound like there is much left there anyway.

One important thing, the credit card companies could try to come after the family members to pay up the remaining balances on the cards. Do not do this, "heirs" are not responsible for the debts of the deceased.

I would ask a lawyer how to handle this situation.

YES, but your family members (brothers/sisters) would share the wheight. If there are no other direct relatives then a flat out YES.

No, if she has a life insurance policy that covers the funeral and her debts, you may have to shell out some money if her life insurance doesn't cover it all.
