According to the Energywatch website: 'You have a right to your money back and you are entitled to ask for it back'. They cannot refuse to give you the money back and if they do you can threaten to take the issue to Energywatch. You could also threaten to move suppliers, or even actually move suppliers if you find one that is cheaper. Whatever you do, do not cancel your direct debit as the company could then treat you as non-payer.
However, you need to be careful. If you are on a regular payment scheme (usually monthly direct debit), you will have made an agreement to pay a certain amount to your supplier at regular intervals to cover the whole year. You should therefore expect to be in credit over the summer in order to keep paying the same amount over the winter. If you request your credit back, your supplier will then have to calculate your required direct debit scheme payment for the next 12 months including all seasonal changes. Demand to see a breakdown of their calculations. It may well be the case that you need to be in credit by a certain amount to cover the winter, but not by as much as you are, making you entitled to at least some of your credit. Suppliers can be notoriously difficult about paying the money out, but very often if you threaten to contact Energwatch or write to the CEO of the supplier (and if necessary actually do so) they will usually back down.
Have a look at the energywatch website: http://www.energywatch.org.uk/
I also recommend looking at the Martin's MoneyTips website (if you don't already know it it's a fabulous site giving loads of advice on consumer rights and how to get the best deals): http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ - check out the utilities section as well as the forum, which also has a utilities section: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/
Hope that helps. Good luck!

Cancel your standing order/direct debit with them until your no longer in credit.

I had to do this as it was taking the mick taking money from me when I was over £200 in credit.

did you sign up for a budget plan? that's why you have credits. with winter coming, your monthly usage will be more than the monthly budget amount and your credit balance will decrease - if it's a cold winter, by april, you may owe them money

Well i Never!

yeh im the same.. almost £100 in credit and exactly the same excuse!! i shall call them immediately and demand it back

Change suppliers!
they will have to give your monies back to you then.

years ago i tried using direct debit for all my monthly payments, but so many companies used it as an excuse to help themselves that i now pay every bill in cash.
whether it was my mortgage, utilities, insurance, sky or whatever, sooner or later i would be overcharged but never once was i undercharged!
accept that most companies these days are pretty unethical and its only a matter of time before you find yourself overcharged.
as you point out none of them are in a hurry to give you a refund of money that is rightfully yours.
you are entitled to a refund but you'll just have to keep hassling them.
its crazy that in the 21st century with all the technology around to save the hassle that i have had to go back to paying bills in cash just like i did back in the 70's

honeysuckle
I can understand why you want your money back, but remember your gas bills will be much bigger during the winter months. That is why paying by direct debit allows you to spread the cost over the 12 months.
If you possibly can, leave the money until Spring and take out any surplus then

They try to encourage you to keep aside for the next bill, but if you want the money its legally yours.

Lord drydreamer of that ilk
Your chance of getting your money back is NIL even if you change your supplier they will transfer your credit to them

They have no right to do this. Phone them up and threaten them with changing supplier i did this and cheque was in the post the next day. If you have an agreed monthly payment and your bills fall below this then surely that money is yours. Its sitting in their bank account making interest rather than yours. Contact them and demand that they send you the cheque.
Good luck

Threaten to leave, it's your money and you're entitled to it. You have to stand up for yourself on this- a few months ago I had a bill of powergen for £700 even though i was on a prepayment meter- it was their mistake as they had never attempted to change my tariff or been to read my meter. I was furious and gave them a reading and they said i still owed them about £100. I stood my ground and told them that they could have their money but would lose my custom. That worked. If it doesnt work think about changing supplier, you should get a cheque back then and maybe you will get a better deal.

Im sure you can get it, ive had letters in the past saying i was in credit and when i rang them they told me i could either be sent a cheque for the ammount or carry the balance over to the next bill, naturally i took the cheque : )
Sometimes depends on the person you speak to, but definately ring them again and see what you can do
