American Express losing your payment checks?
Has anyone been having problems with American Express lately? I have been a member since the 80s, and I have always loved my AmEx.

However, they have lost my payment checks three times just this year (which means that I had to pay finance charges on past-due portions of my bills, which automatically go into "Flexible Payment" plans). They have made about $100 off of me because of these lost checks.

Again, this has NEVER happened to me before this year... Am I the only one who thinks there is something fishy? Also, does anyone have any ideas as to how to prevent lost checks in the future? Any input would be appreciated.

I personally feel like creditors do this on purpose to generate revenue.. after all, it's your word against their's that you mailed the payment.

Judging by everyone else's responses.. it's unanimous!!
I would pay electronically through their website or through your bank's Online BillPay service.

This is the 21st century and you should pay as many bills as you can this way.. not only is there an electronic paper trail, but you save the 39 cent stamp too.

If you have online bill pay, I highly reccomend going that route-- if Amex allows it, its all electronic, and nothing can be lost. If amex doesn't take online bill pay, your bank actually prints the check and mails it to them.. . it would prove that the money was taken out of your account by x date and the bank mailed it on x date. My bank, if it doesn't arrive within the 5 days they guarentee, they pay any late/finance charges. So thats really the only way to get someone else to pay for Amex's mistakes.

You could also mail money orders and keep the stubs to prove the date that you purcahsed the payment-- you'd have no reason to not mail it right away.

How do you know that AmEx even got your checks? I've been paying my bills online for years with no problems. Why bother with checks these days?

I always pay online and record the confirmation number.

I've never had a problem with AmEx in the 16 or so years I've been with them. I started paying my AmEx bill online via their website this year so maybe that's why I'm not experiencing whatever glitch you are. Maybe you should try that; you get a confirmation number so they wouldn't be able to "lose" your payment.

Pay online. I would insist on refunds of fees too. If you have a good history with them they should not be charging you. I have gotten charge cards to refund fees when it was my fault by simply calling and apologizing and asking if there is anything they can do. I just say I made an honest mistake- which is the case most of the time, and they fix it.

Noone could actually make out if the check losing theory is being played by the bank deliberately or it is just a goof up!!

The best way to avoid the same is to go for online payments. It will also give a a transaction ID which you can qoute in case of any problems in future.

Good luck.

i think after the second one i would have started getting a cashiers check so that it could be proven when the check was actually cut.....they can say that you never cut your personal check but they cant argue with the bank....might want to consider this in the future...also if you are a good customer as you stated....as a courtesy most companies will waive a late fee at your request (maybe even two) it never hurts to ask

Jessi
I would write a letter to the home office and tell them about the situation...and also that you would like to have the finance charges re-funded because its not your fault they can't keep track of your payments...then I'd pay off the card, cut it up, and mail it back to them.

Oh and send it certified, return receipt...that way someone has to sign for the envelope and you have proof they received the payment
