Yes last year someone ran up bills of £10.000 on my card buying stuff on the internet. The bank gave me all the money back - they contact the companies used and tell them they have to prove that the cardholder used the card or give them the money back. Because they are only supposed to send stuff to the address the card is registered at, the bank can claim the money back from the company.

If you speak to the fraud section of your card company they should advise you of the process - they dealt with the police, the web companies, card replacements, refund of bank charges, credit rating scores and everything else for me. They also said it's pretty impossible to tell how the number was taken, the card could have been cloned or someone could have just copied the numbers down, and that there isn't much you can do to prevent it.

Good Luck

You should get your money back unless you were negligent in allowing your PIN number to be stolen.
Did you get your card skimmed at a petrol station by any chance? That's where it usually happens, or Dixons/Curry's where half the staff are working for criminal gangs it seems.

?!
yes, first contatct your c.c. company if you haven't already then you will have to make a police report and send it to them. usually your c.c. company has fraud protection. we still had both our c.c.'s in hand so we didn't know how they got our info, the police said a lot of people carry what they call 'skimmers' that are about the size of a cell phone and when you are at a restaurant etc. where they take your c.c. to run it they do but then they run it through this 'skimmer' which records your info then they sell it for 5-10 bucks per card they skim to a 'broker' who makes up new cards and uses them. also the thieves can get your info from online purchases, from your statements in your mail box etc. the police told us to never let our card out of our sight, use a p.o. box for all our bills, never send a bill from our mailbox drop it directly at the post office. so the next time you go to a restaurant and pull out your c.c. or debit card to have them run it, you need to either go with them or take the chance someone there is using a skimmer. sad but true that these thieves are out there but they are. our thieves charged over 1300.00 bucks on ours but our c.c. company was great about it, took it off our bill immediately and then said they would track them down as they work closely with the police and it was a felony. good luck, stay in touch with your c..c company and the police and check your credit report too to make sure they didn't steal your identity along with the c.c. info.

This has happened to me more than once, the cc company gave me the money back and then recharged me for all of it later, This happened on my bank card and luckily the bank declined the withdrawl, but they tried again later, and i had already seen the attempt through my online banking and went down to the bank to sign a form that stated that i had not authorized this withdrawl and the bank could persue the person. Unfortunately this has happened to me again, someone opened a cell phone account in my name and now that the balance is out rageous the company has hunted me down and is threatening me, even after i have filled out fraud reports and filed a police report. Plus the person paid the bill for a few months, but the cell phone company has done nothing to track down the person that stold my identity, oh, and let's not forget all their records of numbers this person called, why don't they call those people and find out who has been using that cell phone number.??? Who has rights anymore?

Pinhead
Nope as I don't have a credit card but last week I had a phone call from someone supposedly working for Jobcentreplus and claimed to be providing a career + jobsearch service. After being asked to confirm my address I was then asked my date of birth(Hallo Alarm bells) and so I ended the call without giving the info but I wonder if the next Q would have been "What is your national insurance number?"?? These freaking scamers need locking up for a long time!

I had my purse stolen and had issues with charges. The bad part was it was at Christmas. I was glad I had already shopped for my children, or they would have missed Santa.

Call you bank right away and tell them what happened. They will want a police report. You are NOT liable for the charges, so you will get your money back, including fees for bounced checks. Tell them about all outstanding checks too, that way they can pay them off if even if your accounts have been drained.

The bank will give you better instructions, but the next thing you need to do is inform the credit reporting agencies what has happened. This will prevent any NEW credit accounts being opened in your name. They flag your credit for awhile (you can ask for always) requiring that any applications be notorized.

I am so sorry to hear about this happening to you. Hopefully the police catch whoever did this. They caught the two guys that had used mine and I am very pleased to inform you that they are sitting in prison, where they belong.

No , but ID fraud yes , about 14 years ago ......banks wanting in total £35,000 off me , not nice , got sorted in the end , but even my (now ex) wife started questioning me ....and your credit rating drops three fold....

Yes.

Notify your credit card company A.S.A.P. and file a police report. Under Federal law the maximum amount you can be liable for is $50.00 but you must file all of the paperwork and notify your card company.

Nothing but sympathy, I was done, someone spent $1200 on TV's in america on my card.

Egg rang me up to tell me, because it was out of my spending pattern, the cost was not allocated to me.

HI
This has happend to me 6 months ago.Bank will give you money back but this will take a while.Firstly they need to make sure that credit card was actually stolen. They will ask you 100 quastions about how you store you card, acess ect.You will need to raport it to police(you probably did it anyway)and with their raport go to the bank.My card was actually clonned .But be careful some bank can refuse to give money bank....:(One more...I've work as a cashier/receptionist for a while.....never ever leave your card without supervision.I could easily copy all the numbers and security numbers from the back as customers didn't care.....I didn't do it but 12 people from my restaurant were sacked!!!

Because it was flight tickets, they have most likely been sent to someone's address, so its highly probable that the offender will be caught. OR, it will be a ticketless flight and the police can nab the person at the airport. Be prepared for it to maybe be someone that you know!

Yes.. I have... I was lucky that it happened with my American Express card... they were very nice about it, and very quick too...and saw that the goods purchased and where they were purchased were obvisouly not my doing. Most credit card companies are really good about fraud these days... do yourself a favor though and order new cards with different numbers from other credit card companies with whom you have accounts.. just to be on the safe side.
