Anyone else get duped by freecreditreport.com?
The part that hooked me into freecredireport.com was the "free" part. Only to find out that they have a monthly hidden membership charge unless you cancel. Why can't anyone earn an honest living these days?
Additional Details
Yes I didn't read the fine print. Opt in rther than opt out should be the norm. To all those who say "read the fine print"...sorry I have a life and don't have the time. I guess I should though seeing as no one can make money these days without being decieving.

Yes, its so difficult to cancel a membership within 30 days. Man that takes an awful lot of work.

They make it very clear that you have to sign up for the 12/month membership to get your report, but they dont charge you until your 30 day free trial is up. So as long as you take the 2 mins out of your month to cancel you will never be charge a dime.

Because they tell you their not free and they are not affiliated with your annual free credit report that you have a right to. You had to give them your credit card number to get the report so that should have told you something. I'm sorry, but by not reading the fine print, the mistake is yours not theirs. You should have realized you were going to be charged for something when you got the report. They aren't really charging you for the report, they are charging you for their credit monitoring service. You can cancel it. But from experience, I know they make it clear that they are not the free credit report you're entitled to. Yes, it seems like a scam, but you were the one that didn't do the research.

Don't feel bad, you're not the only one who's been mislead by freecreditreport.com. However, they have changed their tv ads to disclose that in order to get your "free" report, you'll be signed up for their monitoring service.

Cancel the service, asap. If you really want a truly free credit report, you need to go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com
AnnualCreditReport.com is the only government approved website to receive your free reports. This site allows you to receive 3 credit reports (one report per bureau) every 12 months.

Always read the fine print.

surelycoolgirl
I did it and it was completely free. You must have gone to the wrong link. It shows the one you are talking about, but it also has the completely free one as well. You just selected the wrong one.

The site you need is annualcreditreport.com, the site which truly lets you get free credit reports as required by FACTAct. Granted, they do try to sell you upgrades, but the difference is that they have an opt-in program, not an opt-out program as freecreditreport.com has.

It does seem to me, however, that it would be obvious that any site that advertises as freecreditreport.com does, must be pretty sure that they'll sell something to the user in order to stay in business. Whenever you see prominent ads over and over for something for free, you need to be careful. Free is often only the hook--the rest of it will cost you dearly.

I had an awful ring around the rosie with them. They will charge you every month, even if you cancel. Sometimes twice. I changed bank account so I don't have to deal with this crap anymore.

Report it to Yahoo as abuse. You will be doing society a great service.

Studly
You are standing in a very LONG line of people who were suckered by this company.

Unfortunately they are following all the rules, and they do disclose these fees (in very fine print). The government can't do a whole lot about them at this point.

Consumer education is the best course of action. It certainly does not help when people come on Yahoo Answers and post their link when people ask where they can get there "annual credit report"....

Sadie
I just got my credit report and had no problem... I didn't even have to enter in a credit card. Oh wait, that was annualcreditreport.com

technocelt
A few years ago, the federal government passed a law so that everyone can get one free credit report per every 12 months. The site for that is annualcreditreport.com
They don't advertize like the other companies so I think people have forgotten about them.

I'm sorry to say that you were not duped, nessecarilly. I received a free report from them, no strings attached. You probably did not select the correct option to receive yours so I would not complain about them "duping" you when you clearly did not read what you were signing up for, before signing up.
