Amy Elizabeth | Are there any benefits to paying off the debt that I owe? |
What I mean is that I am hearing that negative information stays on your credit report for 7 years, even if it is paid off. So is there even a point in paying it off if it won't benefit my credit score? Or will it benefit my credit score? Help! I owe about $3900 total through a few different accounts. My credit score now is 550 or 601, depending on which credit bureau you ask. what do I do? I want good credit!!! I've been on my own since I was 16 and made a few bad decisions since I had NO clue what i was doing. I have had to get everything that i have now in my boyfriend or moms name and I pay every single bill on time. But I cant even get a bill in my name right now to help raise my credit score. Additional Details These are NOT credit cards or loans. Just unpaid phone bills, gym membership, medical bills, etc.... |

Paying old debt won't improve your score (unless you get it deleted for payment). The damage is already done. However, creditors look at your whole report, not just the score. Paid old debt looks better than unpaid.
If most of the derogatory items are things like phone, cable, medical bills that are just one entery, you can very likely negotiate not only a delete for payment but settlement for much less than the full amount. If the debt is more than 3 years old, offer 25%; 2 or 3 years old, offer 50%; less than 2 years, offer 75%. Lump sum gets the best deals. Payment plans have to be short. Get any settlement agreement in writing and keep it forever along with your proof of payment. Don't give them direct access to your bank account. |

if its simple ones like cell phones or gym membrshp they shld be able to remove it. the only way something will stay on your c.r is if you dont pay it. and if you settle an acc you will not get as many points bck as if you was pyng it in full plus it will say on your credit reprt tht you settled the accnt. |

For one thing, it depends on how old the debts are. If they are 5 or 6 years old and beyond the statute of limitations to collect, they will drop off your credit report after 7 years anyway. That is part of the FDCPA from the FTC. If a debt collector tells you that they will sell it to someone else and the 7 years starts all over, they are lying to you. It is illegal for them to redate the debt and the original deliquency date holds up no matter who they sell it to.
If the debt is only a year or two old and the negative information is still going to be on your report for the full 7 years, deliquent and "Paid" looks better than just the bad information and unpaid. |

pay off the one with the highest interest first, then work on the next highest. it may not improve your rating but it's the smartest thing to do |

Is there any point? Did you not use these services? Why would you think it's OK to steal? Not paying debts IS stealing. |

Um, yes. If you have the money to pay it off, pay it off instead of sending all of this free money (a.k.a. interest) to the banks every month. |

If you keep things on a credit card you will be charged a finace charge. If I had all the money that was charged in finance charges--I'd be rich. Learn the discipline of paying that off and then only buying things when you have the cash. Don't close out credit cards just cut up the cards. Your Fica score is based partly on having cards that aren't full. |

Two benefits:
1) you'll save on interest payments..that's money-in-pocket for you, and
2) paying off earlier will still benefit you, even if not immediately.
If you have a few bucks in the bank, use some of it to buy a prepaid credit card (works like a debit card). Use it for small purchases and repay immediately on getting the statement. You can use the card to make purchases you would ordinarily pay cash for. That way you won't be fighting additional debt. Your credit reports will improve with that method, but you'll have to be patient as you rebuild your credit.
Good luck. |

See if you can consolidate the debt in one place. This will help get everything sorted. You should put it all in one debt so you can be making one regular monthly payment and many. Also, do your best to make payments over and beyond the minimum payments. It also depends on what kind of debt we are talking about here. |

Your credit rating will improve if you close accounts as well. I would pay it off then get other small loans keep them up to date then close them. |

The kind of negative information that stays on your report for 7 years is a reposession, a bankruptcy, a charge off etc. If you paid late several times yes, the fact that you paid late will show up, but if you start to pay the cards monthly and on time over time it will show up as on time continue to pay on time and then the 60 days late or 90 days late will eventually drop off. As long as creditors see that you've been paying regularly then it'll help. |
