i got a debit card when i was 15 since i was a college student. now that i will be moving out soon, i want to get a credit card to build up my credit. i know that most credit card companies require you to be at least 18, but since i was able to get a debit card, i figured i could get a credit card as well. |

When my son went to college, I got him a Capital One credit card. They have ones especially for youth. As a parent though, I had to be a cosigner on it. I was also allowed to limit the amount of available credit he had on the card. |

Debit cards and credit cards are quite different. I'm not sure where you are based, but in the UK you legally cannot take on debt of any sort until you're 18 - that's why your current (cheque/check) account can't give you an overdraft. It's not long to wait, and anyway it's better not to get into debt too early. Yes, the more debt you take (and pay back fully without defaults) the better you look. But equally if you take out a loan on your 18th birthday it could be read that you had illegal loans you had to pay off quick-sharpish! |

You don't need a credit card to build up your credit. They can be costly and dangerous. Stick with your debit card and go to http://www.daveramsey.com for some great advice about money. |

Oh ya, there are probably alot of credit card companies that would love to give a 17 year old a card. But, you should really think twice about getting one. It is so easy to run up a balance without even realizing it. I had credit cards in college and ended up with alot of debt. It haunted me for years. How you were a college student at age 15 is beyond me, unless you are a genius, in which case you can probably handle a credit card. :) |

Since you must be 18 to establish CREDIT, you must be 18 to have a CREDIT card. You don't even have any credit history when you are under the age of 18. It is illegal for ALL companies to give credit cards to minors. You could try seeing if your parents can add you as a card holder on one of their cards. This simply authorizes you to use the card, but it wouldn't be in your name. You would just be allowed to use it. |

When you use a debit card, you're only accessing funds that are yours that you've put there yourself. With a credit card, you're 'borrowing' the money and i'm pretty sure that it's illegal to lend to minors. it;s the same for mortgages and loans. Sorry! |

You can't legally enter into a contract until you reach the age of majority (18.) A credit card agreement is a contract. Once you're 18 the credit card companies will be all over you. Be careful. The reality is that you DO have to establish a credit history in order to get a mortgage someday and credit cards are part of that. But they are very easy to abuse. |

Say, "Satan, get behind me." Credit cards are dangerous, evil. They tempt you to spend what you do not have. Save your money, invest it, then buy what you want from your money's earnings. What a sham banks play by saying you need to build your credit. Paying your utility bill on time will do the same thing. You're young, be strong and resist. Time is your friend, although I did not understand this when I was 17. Ben Franklin was well aware of the compounded earnings you will make over time from interest. When you use a credit card, the bank earns your interest, not you. |
