rcb26 | Asked to cosign a loan.? |
A family member has asked me to cosign a loan to pay the IRS. If they default, when will I be notified? Will I have to pay it all at once or can I continue to make monthly payments. If they miss a payment, will I be notified. |

If they default you become liable.
If they default that means they go after your posessions or try to sue you. You don't want them to default.
If they cant make a payment you should make it for them!
If they miss a payment the loan goes into default status usually after 30-60 days, and then its big trouble. You dont want it to get to this.
Ultimately this is a bad situation. I dont recommend doing it. |

you will definitely be notified, and you can make this persons payments so as not to ruin your credit, but why would you do that. I say if he can't borrow the money himself, then you know he has money problems to begin with. |

SOMEONE ONCE TOLD ME THAT A CO-SIGNER IS AN IDIOT WITH A PEN.
MY ADVICE, DON'T DO IT.
THEY SHOULD NOTIFY YOU IMMEDIATELY IF THE PAYMENTS ARE NOT MADE. YOU CAN CALL EACH MONTH TO BE SURE. IF THE LOAN GOES INTO DEFAULT THEN THE ENTIRE BALANCE IS DUE. YOU COULD ARRANGE PAYMENTS WITH THEM AFTER THAT BUT IT WOULD SHOW AS A NEGATIVE MARK ON YOUR CREDIT.
AGAIN---DON'T DO IT! |

Don't do it. Let the person work out their own deal, and be responsible for their own problems. If you cosign, you'll end up paying. Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it. The IRS will put them on a payment plan if they ask. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it.
Ditto.
This person has already caused themselves financial problems. Do not let them cause financial problems for you too. The IRS can work with them to create a payment plan, this makes the debtor feel the brunt of responsibility for their own debt/mistake.
"Saving" the family member from their own irresponsibility will not help them become responsible. It actually has the opposite effect. |

NO NO NO Don't do it!! You will wreck your credit and your relationship with the family member. |

Don't do it. Why would the lending agency (bank, credit card) require a co-signer? Because THEY (who do this for a living and know what they're doing) expect the person to default. You can be sure, when they do, the bank WILL notify you and will probabaly expect full payment.
Is this a debt you are willing and ABLE to pay? If not, don't sign. |

You will not only be notified, YOU, not they will be legally required to pay. It sounds like a scam to me. A rule of thumb I learned long ago...don't mix finances with family members. The problem is, they believe that because you're blood, they can get you do things easier than other people. DON'T DO IT. |

You WILL be required to pay it and with interest!!! And while they will most likely let you make payments they dont have to if they dont want to, only a judge can decide that if you truly need to (which means you will have to pay for a lawyer!!)
Dont do it dont do it!!! |
