At work they want me to do tasks that go against my beliefs.am i being unreasonable by refusing?
i work for a place that distributes loans. i got the job through an agency and was told itd be basic admin work. now they are trying to get us to take applications for loans and take money from people's bank accounts when they are overdue (it is legal, the customer agrees in advance) i basically think these kind of companies are a con (very high interest etc) and only took the job because i need money and i thought i wouldn't be too involved with the business, only helping with admin, mail etc. the other temp feels the same and we keep refusing.they are understaffed but i don't feel this is our job.i work hard in my area. would it be best to ask the agency to find something more suitable?i'll need to finish work in just over a month as i am leaving the country.i like the job and people aside from this...
Additional Details
there was no job description as such because i got it through and agency i had to sort of pick a category of job type. i did a data entry test and was lead to believe i'd be doing that and some basic admin stuff.

Yes, I think I would ask the agency to reassign me, before the situation got worse. I can understand your feelings toward this type employment especially if it is not what you were advised it would be. GOOD LUCK

What kind of flak are you getting from your supervisors for not doing the work they ask you? Can you stick it out for a little more than a month? It would be better for everybody if you could find some other work -- I would ask the Temp Agency if they had anything else.

I would also be extremely uncomfortable with this. If you can continue for the rest of your time period in the US WITHOUT submitting to their unethical requests, you might want to contact the Better Business Bureau at some time, perhaps with an anonymous phone call. Read the details of your contract or job description to make sure they haven't slipped this BS in some sort of complicated wording. If you choose to stay, I would inform the agency that sent you there what was going on, at the end of your work period, not before. You might want to inquire about other options as well. I would be irate and talking with a lawyer if someone accessed my account without my approval. It is a complete invasion of privacy and theft in my opinion. Good luck.

You should either find a new job or do what they ask..
It isn't unreasonable what they are asking & it's not their problem that the agency failed to let you know all of the requirements...

if the customer is well aware of what is going on then there shouldnt be any problem But if you are still against it then go with the gut

I think this answer is simple..If you don't agree with what you are asked to do don't do it. Quit the job and move on. Alot of jobs add additional tasks in time and this is not unusual.

buggerhead
If you are finished in about a month anyway, keep the job.

Make it clear that you were hired for specific duties, and that you do not feel it appropriate to add more onto your already full load.

I agree that this is not an admin. assistant duty, I believe it falls to the particular accounts manager.

If this companies practices bother you ethically then you should ask the agency to send you elsewhere.

But, you should know that those people are GRATEFUL to have their bills automatically paid, they do like the convenience of it. You seriously could look at it as a valuable service to them.

lefty551
Almost all job descriptions contain wording that looks something like this: " . . . . and other duties as assigned." so this idea that if it's not specifically listed in your job description you don't have to do it is simply not true. If it's not illegal, and the customers agreed to it in advance, then you are doing nothing wrong by complying - in fact you are wrong NOT to do what your supervisor tells you under those circumstances. But it sounds like you have a moral opposition to the type of company it is, which means you should go work somewhere else ASAP.

Is what they're asking you to do in the job description? If its not, you have no obligation to do it. Just keep refusing, they cant fire you because you refuse to do something you werent hired for and arent being paid for.

I think that you should not do something that goes against your beliefs. It will save you much frustration in the long run. So long as you are doing your job, you should not be asked to do something you feel is unethical. If they fire you, you can appeal this. there are workers organizations that protect you from being forced to do unethical practices. Also you will be leaving soon so its not like you are committed for life to be here. Do what is in your heart and try to keep your job in the meantime. I think that it sets a great example and a standard for people in the future who work there.
I worked for an organization that had practices that were unethical. Once I figured it out what was going on, I quit and began another job. Today, the whole marketing department was shut down due to, i am convinced, the history of unethical practice and unhappy employees. These companies are destined to get what they deserve for the imoral, dirty deeds that they do to people.
