MiSz_P3RFEcT | Bad Credit At 18..but before I was legal.It Wasn't' Me.Help Me? |
I have just recently turned 18 years old last month.I applied for a credit card but was denied. So I decided to check my credit report.Anyway,I discovered that things such as credit cards were taken out in my name, but I was not of age.It says I have owe four companies, but as stated I was not 18 yet and I did not get credit cards from these companies.I tried to dispute the items but the companies won't let me maybe I because they don't have the information needed as to why I want to dispute them, so maybe if I contact these four companies one by one do you think they will take the items off?Serious Answers Only Please. Send a dispute to all three credit bureaus indicating ID theft. Make a police report.
Send certified, return receipt letters to each creditor requesting validation of the debts to include copies of contracts and other documentation that proves the debts are yours. Indicate that you suspect ID theft and attach a copy of the police report.
Either your credit file has been merged with someone with a similar name or a member of your family used your SS#. Be prepared to prosecute that family member. |

Dispute directly with the credit bureaus:
Send all three credit bureaus a letter via Certified Mail + Return Receipt. Include a photocopy of your driver's license and circle your date of birth. In the letter, simply state:
Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, I am requesting validation that I was of legal age (not a minor) when this alleged debt was incurred.
===================
Next, file a police report for identity theft.
FYI: A very high percent of identity theft involving minors is perpetrated by their relatives....so be careful in pursuing this...it might have been a parent....brother...sister...or aunt who did this. You might trigger a criminal investigation against someone in your family...proceed with caution. |

You need to contact experian, equifax and transunion by phone. Tell them exactly what is going and and put a freeze on your credit reports.
You should also file a police report. |

Call Experian, Equifax, or Transunion and report these accounts as fraudulent and say that you are disputing them. You might want to put a fraud alert on your credit as well since it sounds like someone may have had access to your information. This will stop them from taking out new credit in your name for the next 90 days. |

Which country are you in? It makes a difference to the answer.
Sorry to ask, but I'm in the UK Yahoo site and I always see questions/answers from folk all over the world!
/EDIT - thanks for pointing out you're in Dallas, TX. Sorry I can't help, as UK laws are surely different. Do you have the same URL, though, as I get mixed up when I think I'm in the UK part of Answers.
Good luck on getting help on this, though. :) |

If you don't file a police report you are screwed for at least 7 years and do not have credit. The credit card companies will not accept it unless you file a police report. The daughter of a friend of mine did this to her mother and her mother would not report the fraud and did not have credit for many years until she paid it off. Later her daughter stole her jewelry and sold it because she knew she would not call the police. Call the person who used your name and tell him or her that if it is not paid off starting right now you are filing a police report. The person will probably not go to jail, but will have a record of fraud |

go to annualcreditreport.com and you can access the 3 major bureaus for free providing you haven't looked at all of them yet. Any of the bureaus that you have looked at within the past year, you can't look at for free. You do not need a credit card for this website either. Its the official credit report website. Anyways, make sure you dispute it by phone or mail. Phone is the easiest way. You can dispute it, you don't have to write a letter like most of them insist you do. I have done this myself so I know it can be done. This isn't uncommon for people under the age of 18 to have this happen. You can do it with utilities, credit cards, and other various types of things. I would tell you to see your local bank too because they may be able to provide you with extra resources. Do not get suckered in by anyone to pay to have it removed as that is a scam and it requires ZERO money to dispute and get it removed. Contact each bureau individually. Depending on how recent the fraudulent activity is, you may consider putting up a fraud notice on all of your bureaus to stop the scammer who is committing these acts. If it has been a while ago, I would recommend not doing that because once you put up a fraud alert, it can be tough to get it back down and to have potential lenders consider you. Good luck and I wish you the best. |

Hi, the key thing is to take immediate action on this matter. The immediate thing to do is credit repair. Write to the credit companies with copy of birth certificate. This should ensure they remove this from your report as the cards were issued illegally.
It sounds like this was done by somebody close to you. Lets hope they don't do this again as it can take years to resolve these issues. As you can see from my site if you lose a primary bank account, things can get quite ugly.
Please act quickly.
Good luck |

You need to dispute these items on your credit report. You need to report the fraud.
You will pay the price of bad credit, if you do not report the fraud.
Many jobs require a background check and/or credit check. These items would need to be explained, if questioned. If you say that you knew the identity of the guilty party, but did not report it, they could report you.
The credit cards companies could say you are assisting the person who committed the crime by not reporting this. They could file charges against you. You would need to prove that you are not part of a scheme. |
