I would first consider if a credit card is going to ultimately hurt or help you. To be honest, when trying to repair credit, its better to concentrate on clearing up old accounts first, then trying to start new credit. Also - if you're having trouble living in your means, you won't have money to pay back the credit card - which will dig your hole deeper.

However, assuming you've cleared up past credit mistakes, and can live in your means and are now trying to rebuild, the most likely options that you will be able to get are higher interest rates, secured cards or cards with monthly or annual fees.

I would try to steer away from high fee cards - high annual or monthly fees as typically you wind up owing alot in fees quick and it gets harder and harder to do good.

Next is the high interest rate cards. In these cases you are paying the company for the higher risk they took granting you credit by paying higher interest rates. If this all you can get approval on, keep your balances low and make sure to always pay more than the minimum payments so you are working on your balance not just paying interest forever.

Third is probably the best option - secured accounts. One company I know that does these is Capital One. Check out their website for more information. In this case you cover the high risk they are taking by giving them money up front that they can hold as collateral for your repayment.

One more thought is checking out any credit union you belong to or qualify for. They typically have a starter credit card option to help members build or rebuild credit.

As with any credit card - be careful with your balances. Keep up to date on your payments and always try to pay more than the minimum required payment.

Good luck!

Why not get a Pre Pay card?
You load money onto it before you spend it.
That way you don't get into debt but still have the use of a Mastercard.

to rebuild a credit history I would recommend one of the pre-paid or guaranteed ones. look at capital one.

ok the interest rate is evil, and the late charges really bad, but if you use it to buy petrol or something and pay it off, in full, WITHOUT FAIL then you can rebuild a decent history in about 9 months.

I know I did, and after being bankrupt your credit history doesnt come much worse.

Major credit card issuers like Discover, American Express and Chase offer a credit card for bad credit holders. A 'shopping' card offers you an unsecured line of credit from specific sellers. Use these cards to increase your credit rating, since the credit bureaus will be informed about your timely payments.

Take care to ensure your credit is good by making intelligent credit choices. Keep low balances, do not be extravagant and take care to pay off your balances promptly every month.
