How old do you have to be to apply for a credit card? (Discover, American Express, Visa...)...

Bank of America shut down my account for "Fradulent Activity" even though I reported everything to them.
Last week, I saw that there were large deposits made to my Bank of America Account via BAD CHECKS.(1 for $2900 and one for $2500), I also saw that my ATM card was being used while I was at work & I hadn't even realized it was missing as I don't use it every day. The bank suggested I file a police report. I did & called them with the report number, the police departments phone number and the officers name . I have spoken to their fraud department every day since last Thursday. I told them that the deposits were not mine. I told them that the purchases and ATM withdrawls were not mine and that I could prove it as the charges were taking place when I was at work. I went to log in online this morning to monitor my account & found out they revoked my online access. I called them and they told me they closed my account altogether for fradulent activity. WHAT? How can they do that when I reported EVERYTHING to them? They said after their investigation is complete I cannot bank with again

As a general rule they will freeze or close an account while doing investigation. however your entitle to your money you have in there (if it's a bank account).

2. the police report will back your story.

3. the items purchased were they online items?. you can challenge them if they are not delivered to your home address.
if they were store purcharses challenge the signature. (if by pin number you need to change your pin number asap someone stole your access number)

4. call the bank see how much is left then check your account records and make sure you didnt lose any money and close the account and reopen another.

They told you they didn't want your business?

Have you had problems with them before?

Bank of America is the bank of the screwing of Americans, as soon as I get the b***s paid off I will never do business with them again. Ever.

Find a new bank and screw 'em.

tabulator32
They NEED to close the account so whoever is doing it will stop drafting money from the account. The bank may not recoup that if it keeps going on.

They SHOULD, however, set yuo up with a NEW account once an investigation is done to determine you aren't the one trying to fraud the bank.

They should not have told you that you can't bank there anymore. That was rude and unprofessional.

Closing is for your own protection as well as the bank's, and to prevent any further fraudulent activity.

You may be able re-open a new account if none of the problems were yours, but the old one is gone forever.
You may have to open an account at another bank. They cannot report any wrong doing on your part, unless proven. They evidently feel that you had failed to prevent identity theft, or another's use of your ATM card, and/or you did not protect your account number. Maybe, maybe not, but their decision is final.

mcpherson_58
Its for YOUR protection & theirs. You wouldnt really want an acct to remain open that someone other than you has access to, would you?

wizjp
I'd think you'd WANT the account closed untill things sort out.

Suzy
When something like this happened to me, they kept my account open but gave me a new account number. Perhaps they suspect that the fraudulent activity was made by an acquaintance of yours.

They close the account because someone has the account numbers. They will give you a new account, and help you clean up the mess. If they do not close the old account then the fraudulent activity will continue.

they have to do that, but they should offer you a new account with new numbers, this happened to me (not that much money) but until the investigation was over they shut down my account for over a month, then got me started with new numbers

if they are being jerks like that i would find a better bank anyway!!!

Amirra
I'm thinking them closing your account is a good thing here...

nite_angelica
I would call and make sure I'm talking to a supervisor. It doesn't make sense that they would tell you that you can't bank with them again.

I also use BOA and have had fraudulent activity (although a much smaller amount), and they just replaced my money and cancelled my debit card. They did tell me that if the charges kept showing up we'd have to close my account and open a new one.

I would keep calling BOA and speaking to different supervisors about the issue. Stay on them as much as you can.

You should be happy that they closed the account. Obviously there is someone who has access to your personal info and is doing bad things to you. You need to get a fresh start with a new account, new PIN number, etc. and get the other stuff resolved separately. The bank was protecting themselves from further charges, etc so it was in their best interest to close the account. The fraud wasn't you, but it was on your account.
Good luck. I had something like that happen to me too, and it took many months to get it straightened out. Always shred your bills before you put them in the trash! Expensive lesson learned by me when someone stole my identity and charged thousands of dollars of stuff and got a phone card in my name and ran up $1500 in long distance!

Steveo
The long and the short. I think that you may have had a misinterpretation on that last piece. The account was closed to avoid more theft from you. This should be reported to the credit reporting agencies as well. You will get your money back as it was fraud. Talk to customer service at the bank. If they tell you that they don't want your business, either say thanks for nothing, and get a better bank (preferably a credit union) or ask them if they want this whole episode reported to one of the news stations in your city. They won't like that.

Back in 2005 I received a check from an investor to purchase properties for them. I put the check in my account and to the bank to check it out. The banker say it was from a mortgage company. I though no more about it. I got a phone call from the investor asking me to send money back to him because they will the do business at a later time. I got the money and send it back to them. After a month the bank send me a letter saying that they THANK it was counterfeit and ask me to pay the money back. My business was waiting on a check for $7,000 dollars they bank took the money ask up to pay additional 2,000. I took them to court and found out that the check was not counterfeit and that the certify check came from chase bank doing the purchase of another bank. When I went back to the bank they told me that they will never do business with me again. They did not clear their records and they did not give me back my money. I had to close my business and I suffer badly behind them saying that they THANK that it was counterfeit. I took the check to the FBI and they told me I will have to take this up with the bank. My case in the court is open and I am looking for a lawyer to help me with the six year case.
