Bank of america overdraft fee question?
Ok the deal is that I made a payment with my debit card about a week ago at pizza hut, and they are barely charging for it now and I currently didnt have any money in my debit card so they are charging me an overdrawn fee, my question is, isnt it supposed to charge the card instantly? can i do something about this (make the bank waive the fees)?
Additional Details
I didnt ask if i was responsible or not, so please stop it with that, nobody is a %100 responsible, stuff happens.

You have an overdraft. That is why you card still worked even though you didn't have enough money to cover it. The purpose of this is to avoid checks bouncing. If you don't use any checks then pay up the negative balance and go cancel your overdraft. You are allowed to do this. This way your card will be denied when you do not have the funds. If you write checks then they will bounce and it could end up hurting your credit.

Best way to handle this is to open two accounts. One with no overdraft, for debit card purchases (cancel overdraft). Then open another with overdraft for checks (keep overdraft). Some will tell you bounced checks don't hurt your credit. Not true. Because anyone you write a check to that reports to a credit agency or if you close your accounts (without overdraft and bounced checks) that will also get reported to the credit bureau.

So heed my advice any questions just email.

You have to figure that once you use the card the money is gone from your account. The fact that it took a week to post does not really matter. While not great that it didn't post right away, there is nothing illegal or incorrect about it.

As to what you can do. If this is your first OD fee they may waive the fee. You can't MAKE them waive the fee, it is their choice if they will waive the fees or not. The best thing to do is call them up and request if they would. If you talk to them calmly and professionally they may be more willing to do that for you.

You can ask the bank to waive the fee. If you haven't had any previous problems, they will probably do this as a courtesy. Try to make the request in person. If you call and they say no, write a letter requesting it.

This is a case where you'll get more with honey than vinegar. They don't have to do this for you so be pleasant and upbeat.

You are responsible for knowing what you've charged and how much money you have in your account. You can ask BoA to waive the fee but it's unlikely they will. BoA is especially resistant to that.

bdancer222
You are absolutely correct that stuff sometimes happens. A responsible person would say, "I messed up" pay the fee and move on instead of blaming the bank and looking for ways to get the fee removed.

Banks can/will/may back date the transaction to the actual date of the transaction, not the date the bank received the request from the merchant. Then compute any overdraft charges. Money maker for the bank.

You could try, but it will be to no avail. When you pay for something you should deduct it from your account and forget about that money.

Just because the fee was not withdrawn immediately does not mean that you get a free pas on the charges.

The only thing you can do is to not let this happen again.

You can open a savings account and link that savings account to your checking account. That savings account will cover any overdraft fees that you have if your checking account doesn't have any funds in it. Every paycheck determine your expenses and try not to overspend that way you can have some money into your savings account.

Your fault, not the bank's. If you used a debit card or write a check, it's your responsibility to have the funds in the account to cover it.
