Ok I just enrolled in online banking for both my checking and credit card. I scheduled to pay my bill online but for whatever reasons the payment went through twice. Twice the amount was deducted from my account and I was fine but a check that I wrote about a month ago cleared and now it shows up on my statement as a returned check. Is this the same thing as a bounced check? will i have to go to court or anything for this freak accident. Please help me

Thanks for all the help. Anyway i read that the other persons bank may try to resubmit the check and I get paid on thursday so hopefully everything works out. I will call my bank and thanks for letting me know |

Relax, you definitely will not need to go to court. Call your bank on Monday and try and straighten out the issue. The worst that is going to happen is you get a returned check fee of $10-20. If it was the banks fault for charging you twice by mistake, you should get the fee returned to you too. Hope that helps! |

You wont go to court, just call or go to the bank and explain what happened, sometimes they remove or reduce overdraft fees, call the company that took the double payment out and have them credit your account, the check will probably be run through again so make sure funds are there. The bankers will be really helpful don't worry about it. |

if the company you made the payment were the ones who made the mistake and you did not submit your payment twice then they will pay your overdraft fee if you call and let them know what happened. I have had to do that before. Your bank will work with you as well. If you can't get the company to refund it and you do not normally had things go back then call your bank they are usually very happy to refund the OD fee even though it's them losing the money. They are great about that. When that happened to me I had about 10 charges go through so you can imagine the OD charges and the bank cleared them all. |

A returned check is the same as a bounced check, as opposed to an overdraft, in which case the bank covers the amount for you and charges you a fee for it. If it was a clerical error the bank will adjust the balance in your favor and return any returned item fees they charged you. They'll probably have the merchant resubmit the check, if they haven't already, and this time it will clear. You shouldn't have to go to court over one check. |
