How about a Tuxedo card or the one offered by Prime? These are pre-paid mastercards. You top them up at paypoints and you don't need a good credit rating to buy one!

not a chance Im afraid. Debit cards dont check the amount in your account (well electron does) which means you can perhaps go overdrawn, which is illegal, so they wont give you the option. |

Hi there.
Thinkbanking will accept all and there is a maestro with the account. This account is designed exactly for those with difficulty in getting a bank account, there is a monthly charge but more to the account and very good for budgeting,. The other accounts avaliable, if they are not a creditor, is the coop cashminder (visa electron) and the natwest step account ( solo card with that I think) avoid first direct and hsbc they are closing accounts of those in iva's or bankrupt.
As also said there are prepaid cards available, tuxedo and mycashplus are popular, you can check them out by googling for the whichprepaidcard and there is a comparison table. They all charge in some form.
Gone are the days where if you are bankrupt you cannot get a bank account, in fact those who have been through this highly stressful situation are generally more credit worthy than a lot of those with large debts. People can learn. Also for those who look harshly at those who have had debt problems, remember this can sometimes be down to misfortune not spending for the sake of it, some can lose a job, have illness , lose a partner lots of reasons, so please realise think though you may be able to pay your credit card bills and mortgages, it only takes one major life changing event to put you in a similar position.

I heard on the Motley Fool that the Co-operative bank gives an electron visa debit card to bankrupts with a basic account.
They also say that Nationwide and Barclays issue such accounts, but not with cards always and not usually with cheque books. Just for standing orders and direct debit payments.
I really don't know how you would spot a bankrupt on the street. Perhaps if they had a co-operative bank card then that would help you identify them! |

I have in the past declaired bankrupt and I have a bank account with cooperative.
It has no credit facility, ie overdraft or cheque book. But I have an electron debit card and I can set up standing orders and direct debits on the account. It's called a cashminder account.
You can't use electron cards on some online shopping though, I know that tesco don't accept it, but most do.
I drive my husband crazy with my online shopping, so it can't be that bad!
I got this account within a week of being declaired bankrupt.
They don't accept everyone though, I don't know why they would accept some, but not others though.
As far as I'm aware both barclays and nationwide offer bank account for bankrupts, but I don't know if they have debit cards available on their accounts, I think nationwide does, but barclays doesn't.

You won't get any sort of debit card until you are at least discharged from the bankruptcy. Banks will be very cautious. |

I don't think you are legally allowed to have a bank account and therefore a debit card for 5 years. Link below is about pre-paid debit cards. You might be able to get one of those.
